I either use the control or just hold the power button. But I dont flick the switch at the back, is this bad?caponord720
Yes. The console is only 70% off. There is still a red light on it. It's a waste of electricity. Same as in TV, don't just turn it off using the remote. :)

Aside from the power consumption will it injure my ps3? I used to leave my ps2 the same way as well...

I'm not sure. Just totally turn it off to be safe.
I just recalled, leaving the red light on means standby. Hehe.
I turn off my PS3 by the controller then flick the switch on the back of the console is this the right way to turn off your PS3?muelsok
Thats the way I do it:)
I hold the PS button down on the controller until the menu pops up. I than selectshut system down from the menu.
After the PS3 has shutdown, I turn off the rocker switch located in the back.

Also, I hope you all know that in a recent firmware update, the system was updated so you can turn off the system through the XrossMediaBar. It's the "Turn Off System" option in the "Users" column. You can still hold the PS button to bring up the classic menu with that option, though.
I hit it with a baseball bat until it turns off..i read it in the manual i think..Leon7J7
Yea, I read that too. It's under a section about troubleshooting, "If unit will not turn off, a baseball bat should fix the issue. Use a Louisville Slugger for best results."

It's not "70%" off. It's more like 98% off. It barely uses any juice in standby, which is where I leave it all the time unless I'm moving it.
