How does the size of the storage drive where I save all the crap I download have any affect on the PS3s ability to run PS2 games? It requires more than 40GB to run a standard game? 40GB is a lot of memory.

The 40GB MODELS are made differently than the 60/80GB models, however if you were to put a 40GB HDD into an 80GB or a 60GB MODEL, it'd make no difference in the performance your games.

The size of the hard drive has nothing to do with support for backwards compatibility. People make the mistake of saying the NTSC 20 and 60 GB models have hardware based backwards compatibility and the 80 GB NTSC and 60 GB PAL have software based backwards compatibility. That is incorrect, all of these models have PS2 hardware built in. The 40 GB model has none of this hardware so currently no PS2 support is available. The NTSC 20 GB/60 GB models have the PS2s Emotion Engine RISC CPU, and the PS2s Graphics Synthesizer GPU. This allows for near 100% compatibility. The NTSC 80 GB/PAL 60 GB model have the PS2s Graphics Synthesizer GPU. The Emotion Engine RISC CPU is emulated in software. The 40 GB model (both NTSC and PAL) have neither of these pieces of hardware, and the current emulation only emulates the CPU not the GPU also.

Have Sony come out and said that this new MGS 80 GB model has PS2 compatibility at all? It could just be the same hardware as the 40 GB but with a bigger hard drive.

That's a nice break down of the hardware of the different SKU's. The thing so many don't get is the 40 gig was released basicly for the people in the NTSC regions that were compaining about the price of the 20 and 60 gig SKU last year. Now there complaining about no BC in the cheaper SKU. Unfortunatly the people in the PAL regions were only able to get the 60 gig SKU for a short time (I don't think it was offered a full 6 months in the region) now the only option they have is the 40 gig SKU.
