Hi

How good is the PS3 at picking up Wi-Fi connections?

I am upstairs and my router is downstairs so I was wondering whether I would need a booster, or would the PS3 be able to pick it up (with a decent signal) on it's own?

Thank you.

yup. I live on the 3rd floor in my house and pick up wifi from the 1st with no problems for things as intense as netflix. That being said, I also have a wired connection which works much better than the wifi at this distance from the router

the actual wifi itself is ok for picking up but i think the actual speed of it in the ps3 is rubbish, it takes along time for downloads through wireless on the ps3 and actually through wired on the ps3 but my pc wireless is so far superior, i tested this thoery wen i ran the test on the ps3 for both wireless and wired, and it was alot lower then my wireless speed on my pc. very strange. but it is a good enough speed for gaming.

Looks like you need to look into Powerline Adapters.

Wi-Fi on PS3 is serviceable but doesn't really do justice to MP and downloads. I know Ive been using it for 2 years, switched over to powerline adapters because my router too is far away from my system and now Im getting a strong wired connection without messy wires all over the house.

It's going to depend on several factors. Distance from router, thickness of walls, quality of the router itself, strength of your internet connection, etc, etc, etc. Mine works excellantly, but I have a good router and the PS3 isn't terribly far from the router, plus my walls are like paper.

It still will be dependent on how you indivually have your wifi modem/router positioned...etc.

How would you have your router downstairs and your console upstairs without the signal going through walls?

Simple, router is at bottom of stairs, PS3 is at the top of stairs in a room which is directly infront, so it gives a line-of-sight pretty much

When I lived in a house with the ps3 downstairs(basement) and the wifi router up stairs I was lucky if the connection could even be seen in the list of connections.
