Not playing MGS 3 is like having amnesia.

Seriously.

If you don't play MGS3. You're not going to enjoy MGS4. AT ALL.

meh, it features new gameplay, which will come in handy in MGS4 known as "CQC" (Close-quarter-combat). Another pretty neat feature is killing or catching animals/critters for food (rations). It's alot more stealth compared to the others, which you play as Big Boss, who is the fath.........umm, damn I dont know what spoil means to you, but if you have the patience and time just finish it. If not, then it isn't a MUST beat.

MGS3 is the story of Solid Snake's father, but more importantly, it was the events of that game that set in motion what comes to a head in MGS4, 50 years later (chronologically). It's not "just a memory," because you're not playing as Solid Snake, plus characters first introduced in MGS3 are important to MGS4's story such as...
EVA still being alive, though she goes under the codename Big Mama now. She turns out to be an important character to the whole series, as well as Solid Snake and Big Boss
Story goes backward so you maybe will get confused.

You are playing with different character too.

there are alot of characters that you want to know from MGS3. Plus its just a great game overall with high replay so you'll want to get it.

If you want to understand the story then I highly suggest you play MGS1,2,3 otherwise the game is still worth it for the gameplay which is really great and intuitive plus you would still find the story somewhat interesting.
