Ok, go ahead and laugh, I'm not sure I've ever really played an RPG, unless you want to count some of the Pokemon games back in the day for the Game Boy haha. I've always been a fan of an action-adventure/shooter games, and RPGs have just never really interested me before. But lately, I've played so many shooters that I really want to try something different. I've been looking at Oblivion, first of all because it's cheap now (I don't want to spend alot of money for an RPG if I'm going to end up hating it), and second of all it got a 9.5 here on Gamespot.

Now I've heard alot of good things about Oblivion, but I've also heard some bad things. The main things I've heard about it is that some people thought it was boring, and maybe that the graphics weren't very good, but tbh I don't really care about the graphics as long as the gameplay is enjoyable.

So first of all, did you enjoy Oblivion? And second, woud you recommend it to someone who has never played an RPG?

I have a friend who is pretty much only into shooters. He played through Oblivion. It is an "action" RPG where you have to slash with your sword, block with your shield, etc. There is a lot of "stuff". You can spend 100+ hours in the game and not find everything. The vampire subquest is broken in the GOTY edition, might want to get the "white" box cover as that will be cheaper and won't have the add-ons and the vampire stuff theoretically works in that one. I really loved Oblivion. It is not for everyone. If you get it used at GS, you can return it if you hate it within seven days?

It starts our kind of slow at first - customizing your character (appearance, class, race). The first couple hours you're kind of doing what the game tells you, but after that, you're given complete freedom to play how you want to play - which is one of the best aspects of the game.

It may take some getting used to, especially since you are not much of an RPG player, however, the game is very addicting. Most of the game is played through melee style first-person, so if you find that intriguing then you at least give it a rent.

So I don't guess they've released a patch or anything to fix that sidequest? But even with the one sidequest being broken, is it really worth it to buy the regular edition without the Shivering Isles expansion than getting the GOTY edition with the Shivering Isles expansion although that one sidequest is broken? I just checked on the PSN and it $30 for that expansion, and if I really ended up liking the game, I really wouldn't want to fork out another $30 for an expansion haha. Thanks for the help though!

Yeah the expansion is worth it,especially if you can find it used online for about 40 bucks.Knights of the nine is not even on the PS Store. Now here are my good points and bad points about the game.

The good.

  • Good graphics
  • Plenty of things to do
  • Good storyline
  • The game is HUGE
  • Nice variety of weapons
  • Nice variety of spells
  • The game is a great deal for 40 bucks

The bad.

  • Gets very boring if you don't take breaks
  • The Voice overs could use some work
  • Some of the quest, while good feel like fetch quest
  • More of an action game, rather than an RPG
  • The world levels with you.

I say get the game with the expansions.Just when you play be sure to take small breaks in between.

I love this game. The graphics, setting and music just get to me. The game is huge and there is plenty to do: quests, wander around, wreak havoc. I would suggest to get the original and the expansion separately if you can. The Game of the Year edition has some issues like with character dialogues and an unavoidable glitch in a quest that would normally cure you of vampirism (if you get infected). If you get infected on the GOTY edition then you're stuck like that unless there is a way around that I am unaware of. Otherwise you'll have to go to a church and cure yourself quickly so you don't have to do that quest.

You can get the Game of the Year version "New" for $29.99 now. I used to have the orignal white box one and put 200 hours into it and I thought I really wasn't into RPG's. I sold it , miss it, and recently re- bought it, but now I got the GOTY version and have put 40 hours into it.

Just make sure you don't turn into a Vampire in that version, I keep hearing that if you do, you'll get stuck like that. It has great graphics, even by today's standards. IMO , it's the best RPG on the PS3 so far.

Well you guys have pretty much convinced me to buy it, but now I'm kinda stuck haha. GOTY edition of regular edition? I would like the GOTY edition except for the vampire problem, so I don't want to get stuck like that. But then again, I also don't want to have to pay $30 extra just for the Shivering Isles expansion. Its kind of a lose-lose situation either way I go haha.

Get the game of the year version. If you look good enough you can get the game for about 30-40 bucks. That and you get Knights of the nine, something you can't get off the PS store. It is not hard not being a vampire. When certain people ask you, don't accept. That and there are cures that can stop it before it takes full effect.

Sounds easy enough haha. Walmart has the GOTY edition for $30 now, and for hundreds of hours of gameplay it definitely sounds worth it...

I'd get it, don't know about the PS3 GOTY Edition, but the PC version works fine, when you get Vamp. you can cure it with the quest. I've actually been playing Oblivion for the past few days and I have accumilated over 100 hours of game time (I played for a few months, stopped and came back) I havn't even done much in Shivering Isles, but I must say Knights of the Nine I don't think adds that much, just some of the best Light Armor on the game.

In all honesty, greatest game I have ever played in my life. Like other have said, it starts off slow, and you won't really be sure if you like it or not. Once you can get past the first few hours, you have this huge open world to explore, all of these places to discover, thousands of people to talk to. If there were just a few more new missions, I would play it all over again. As it stands now, I had put about 150+ hours onto mine already.

Sounds good. I'm getting tired or buying games that are extremely short, and it sounds like this one will keep me busy for a while.

But yeah, about the vampire thing, they are saying that the quest on the PS3 GOTY version is messed up, so the only other way to heal yourself is by getting to a church quickly or something like that. But it doesn't seem to hard to aviod, so it shouldn't be a problem.

my favorite game of all time, over 200 hours put into it. Although I will say it is not for everyone. The only downside for me was that in order to beat every aspect of the game it will kill your social life.

If you can find the Shivering Isles in a store you can get it for really cheap. I would highly suggest doing so, before going for the GOTY. The only hard part would be finding both them. If you can get them used at EB games you would be looking at 30-40 bucks for both. I wish I did that, and I had the original too. But I brought it in for 20 bucks for the GOTY paying 40 bucks with the 20 dollar deduction, when I could've just got the Shivering Isles there without the glitches in GOTY.

It's actually really fun for it's time. I haven't played it in quite a while so I'm not sure how it stands up to games now. I just thought it was too hard to use melee weapons and the AI was pretty lousy. If you've played Fallout 3 then you'll instantly recognize similarities.

Oh ok. Yeah I'll try to find Shivering Isles at Gamestop or on the internet somewhere. I'd rather pay $10 extra for a game that I doesn't have any glitches.

Well that is you.I hated it personally. You always had to feed on time,it would get in the way with my quest doing, people would not talk to you.It was cool at first, but after awhile I could not wait to get rid of it.

get the GOTY editon...dont be put off by the vampire stuff people are thinking too narrow mindedly. when you catch the disease you have three in game days to find a church and pray at the altar and you will be cured. Or better yet you can become a powerful mage like myself and make a "cure all diseases" spell and cure yourself instantly.
