I read lots of different stuff but its all based off of what other people have been saying. For those of you who have actually played it how is it?

It's nothing like the console versions. It was promising, but it feels like another Need for Speed game.

Yes worth $20 IMO. I got it on release day and like the previous poster said it's not like the console version at all - more arcadey feel to it. Better than the PSP version of Undercover though!
its ok i guess.. still fun to play.
But imo, motorstorm and burnout are better.

Yeah no worries... it's a really great game but i would agree with a podcast I heard recently where the guy said that it's a game which requires a lot of self-motivation in terms of continuing and seeing it through to completion. I really like the game, but I'm a motorsport freak who watches SPEED channel religiously and needs no reason at all to turn laps (and yes, I've driven a 99 lap race in GT PSP, I'm that ridiculous)... you seem more to the arcade side of the wheel anyway, but I thought I'd ask because it also seems like you want a quality experience. I think if you like a genre, there are a lot of games which others might say no to but you as a fan will enjoy anyway. For example, most people will say that "Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade" is a mediocre to lame game because it doesn't have any cutscenes, voice acting, or an original thought in the entire game... and they're technically correct... but because I really liked games like "Diablo" and "Norath" and other games built off that old Blizzard engine, "Untold Legends" fills a need for such a game in a portable format. I certainly hope they make a better entry in this genre soon for the PSP, but until they do, it's alright.
I think the same could be said for the "Need For Speed" game... if you've exhausted all the other truly great arcade racers, you'll probably find at least $20 worth of fun and unlockables, etc. in the game. Look at reviews online and check to make sure there aren't any GLARING problems with the game programming-wise or any glitches which make it unplayable, and then go for it. I've found a lot of games that have provided at least that much entertainment when looking for a surrogate between big titles. And even a few that I have ended up REALLY diggin'...
:D
