Lots of people claim that the fighting game genre is down right now but I would like to bring up the question how? How is the genre down when just a few years ago we got VF4, SC3, Tekken 5, DBZ: Budokai 3 (I know, its not considered a real Fighter, but I love DBZ, and it was actually a good fighting game), and Mortal kombat: deception. And in the time period of about a year or so we got DOA 4, and VF5 which were both great games and featured online on the 360, and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection on the PS3 with online. Those are some great years in the fighting genre, and I can tell you this, Tekken 5, VF4, and Budokai 3 sold very well, cant say about SC3 or Mortal kombat, but I bet they sold pretty well, and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection was one of the top PSN downloads for a long while.

2007 was a pretty big year for the fighting genre, but This year is going to be crazy, Soul Calibur 4, Tekken 6, Super Street Fighter II HD remix, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit (I truly believe this game will surprise lots), and the possibilities for Street fighter 4 and a new Mortal Kombat game, and don't be surprised if a newer updated version of VF5 comes out, kinda like VF4 EVO. So basically, if these games come out and are at the level of quality they should be, This year is gonna be a crazy year, even without SF4, This game will most likely be the best year in fighting in recent history and this is currently the best time period of fighting games since the late 90's when Tekken 3, Soul Calibur, Street fighter 3, and virtua fighter 3 came out, which are pretty much the best games in all of those fighting series (Except SF3, I still think SF:A3 is better).

So please people, come here and post some of your fighting games love.

its not that they not making fighting games anymore. Its more that the 90s was the fighting game era. Street fighter 2, mortal kombats, tekkens. The death of arcades killed the genre (well not really) but back then they where cranking out fighters like they do FPS today. The genre is down and will probably never reach its level of main stream it was at. mortal kombat has sold over 19 million, street fighter sold 23 million, this was in the 90's. they would be lucky to sell more then 2 million of any fighting game today. thats just the way it is. I am and old street fighter, mortal kombat, world heroes, hell any neo geo fighting game vet. I used to live in the arcades. trust me it will never be the same as it was, Im not saying its not main stream, or they don't sell well anymore. Its just hard to top 23 million sold.

True true, But I think with online modes starting to enter the fighting genre, I truly believe that fighting games will get back to that way, but people are saying that the fighting genre is more or less dead, but I say not. And true SF and MK sold 19 and 23 million copies but they were on like 10 different consoles. Either way, I don't think the fighting genre will ever die and I think it is going to get back to the good ol' days with online.

correction: DBZ Budokai 3 IS a real fighting game

My bad, I love DBZ budokai 3, I prolly should of quoted real fighter, but the DBZ games in genre have never been considered "real fighters" by other people, and really they were not until DBZ budokai 3 came out, but the Tenkaichi games are in no way "real fighters" but they are fun. Hopefully Burst Limit is exactly like budokai 3 with better graphics and animations and maybe some more moves and a little tweaking to the gameplay.

i agree with u 100%, the fps genre is ruling but when someone gets a crazy fighting online mode for a fighter it will boom again. VF5 was ok the online could have been better and its kinda hard to control on the 360 but none the less DOA4,Tekken, and Soul Calibur. That mortal kombat was hot too it could be a lil more balanced and deeper it would be coo to kill ur opponent on line after a grueling fight in HD. Neways Fighters aren't ever going away jus like those FPS I don't know when another resurrgence is coming but Me and U will probably be part of it cuz im down for it!

Fighting games may be a wee bit less popular then they were back in their hey day.But theres still plenty of people that love the genre(including me). Plus the countless hours i spent in the arcade(not to mention thousands of dollars) is all pretty much a credited to fighting games. The one fighting game that needs to be announced is Killer Instict 3. That would bring alot of old school fighters outta retirement.Hopefully Street Fighter 4 feels in that gap.

Ya, I acutally enjoy Killer Instinct, that would be awesome if they brought out a third game. But I dont know if it will would bring lots of old school fighters outta retirement.

Yes man, I can not wait for fighters to hopefully take off again with online play. We will just have to wait and see, but if it dont take off again oh well, there will always be enough fighting fans for them to keep making the games.

We lost DOA  ; DOA 2 had the best counter system ever, it became crap on X360, as the lazy developer cashed the check and underdeveloped 3 and 4

The fighting genre will male a huge comback this year with the release of Tekken 6, SC4, SF4 etc.

The fighting genre is what got me into gaming and it holds a special place in my heart. Tekken 6 is my second most anticipated game this year after MGS4.

FPS's have replaced the Fighting genre as the most popular. but i a weird way it was good because the quality of the fighting games coming out now are really high and no more lame generic fighters are being released monthly ala Fps genre

for those of you that think online can bring fighters back, I'm not sure. I have played capcom vs snk on xbox, Doa ultimate, doa 4, Street Fighter 2 hyper fighting, ultimate mortal kombat 3, all those games had lag. the only fighting game I have played with little lag is FNR3( I would consider boxing). I have VR5 but for ps3 (no online), FNR3 works well online because it doesn't need twitch reflexes. the other games are based on split second twitch reflexes. just a little lag can take the fun out of a Street fighter type game. Good online for the old games we love would be almost impossible to get lag free. they would need a new type of fighter that is built not on twitch reflex moves but more of a slowed down game. SSBB, Power stone, FNR3 games like that would play lag free for the most part.

Well of all those games you named they are either updated ports of older games or not that good, well, I guess Hyper fighting on the 360 is the only one thats not very good, DOA 4 is pretty good and while the online had some difficulties, it worked good enough. But I will say this, I have played Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, VF5, and Mortal Kombat: Deception online, and in my experiences I have gotten very little lag and I imagine that will only get better in the future for Tekken 6, Soul Calibur 4, DBZ:Burst Limit, Next Mortal Kombat, next DOA, SF4, and any other new fighters featuring online.

I actually hope they go with a little more direction then they have been the last couple of years, I would like them to get the roster size down to around 20-25 characters for this one and I really hope they fix the stiffness of the characters in terms of feel and animation that the series has always had, I dont know what it is, but recently when going back to armageddon, Im finding it harder and harder to overlook like I and many people have done for years. But we will see what midway brings to the table with this game, Im really hoping its good, I mean, I'm sure it will look absolutly fantastic since its using the UE3 but if they don't fix these problems it might as well just be Deadly Alliance with a new coat of paint. Oh and don't get me wrong, I love the MK series, ive been playing it back since the early 90's when it first came out and I was a little kid, but I think its time for them to reimagine some things for the MK series.

and don't be surprised if a newer updated version of VF5 comes out, kinda like VF4 Evo

acidic_dude

Yeah that would be cool if Virtua Fighter 5: Evolution came out with online play, 2 new characters, some new moves for all the characters, deeper customization, slighty improved graphics, and an improved quest mode. And what if they did all that and made it a "Greatest Hits" budget title right off the bat like VF4Evo was for PS2.

! VF5:R has been revealed in the newest issue of Famitsu magazine. That sumo from VF3 is back along with a new character and new stages. No word yet on a console release yet from what I know.

The L2 and R2 buttons suck for fighters...megadeth78

Honestly, why would someone be using L2 and R2 in a fighter? Even with the 5 and 6-button control schemes in certain fighters (like Street Fighter, most Capcom fighters, or Guilty Gear), the fifth and sixth buttons would be mapped to L1/R1 anyway.

Tekken 6 is going to suck sadly, that game plays just like Tekken 5 no different and it's imbalance as heck.

Well, with all the releases of fighting games comming up (more importantly, SF4) it might bring it back to life. But there was a very sad period when fighting games were reduced to the likes of MAME and MUGEN. Only empty shells of once was..

Not really. I'm a SF player and L2 has always been used (LK for Gouki's Shungokusatsu) and R2 has always been for 3xK Supers for me. PS controler has been the best button layout for a fighting game I've ever used. Nothing is left out or lacking, just right.

Fighters are going down just as every other arcade based genre to date.
I'd wish they brought back shmups, but its not what the public wants.

Hell if i even bring up the Gradius or R-type series to gamers they greet me with strange looks on theyre faces. Theyd much rather be blabbering on about theyre fafourite finalfantasy game or latest FPS.

Well im not going to have my hopes up high for a new MK game. But atleast they're going in a different direction this time (gameplay-wise). Ed Boon said the new MK game will have a "brand-new fighting engine" along with a bunch of "brand-new characters" so it should be interesting. It should have good graphics running on UE3.

I can't wait for Tekken 6. It's one of my most anticipated games of '08.
