I had just fixed my 40GB PS3 by following Gilsky's step by step instruction and it worked. Has anyone done that? How lond did your PS3 work after you fixed the YLOD?
All feedback welcome!!!

I actually got the YLOD for the first time today and fixed it. I hope it will last a long time, but I heard that the problem will most likely occur again
A year, 4 days, and counting. I just cleaned out the dust and replaced the thermal compound.
Its a 60gb model too.

Did you do anything specific to have it last that long? I read that if you keep the ps3 flat as opposed to vertical, it holds longer. Have you used the heat gun? what temperature? How long did you hold it over the chips, 15 20 sec, longer. Did you do both sides of the motherboard? Let me know... trying to gather as much info as I can to make it last as long as possible.

Well I bought it secound hand, the blu-ray lens was burnt out, and the first thing I did was redownload all my games and stuff from my previous PS3 (was stolen.) That took about 5/6 hours. The next morning I went to turn it on and it had YLoD. I opened it up and there was dust everywhere (dust balls literally filling all the open space.) So I cleaned out all the dust and then just replaced the thermal compound. I used Artic silver 5 for the cell, but ran out with just a little on the RSX so I had to use some cheap radio shack kind. I didn't use a heatgun at all.

Smart man there! I don't care what they say on youtube...NEVER use a heatgun on a motherboard of anykind!
I stripped one of the screws needed to get to the motherboard so i cant add the paste...but if you get YLOD again cant you just add more paste?-Hoax-
You could, but at that point it would only be a temporary fix at best. Overheating can cause a lot more problems than just dried up thermal compound. A huge reason why so many 360s died was because microsoft used x-clamps to hold down the cpu/gpu and when a lot of heat was added the pull of the x-clamps meant that the motherboard would warp. After a motherboard warps the pins on the cpu/gpu wont hit the contact points of the motherboard. Now the ps3 doesn't have the x-clamps but it does still produce enough heat to where the board can become malleable. So at that point you'd need to reflow the board.

Thanks for clearing that up :) Know I need to find away to unscrew a stripped screw. :([QUOTE="TehSonofUgly"][QUOTE="-Hoax-"]I stripped one of the screws needed to get to the motherboard so i cant add the paste...but if you get YLOD again cant you just add more paste?-Hoax-

Oh hell.... Hardly worth the effort... That must suck....It lasted 45 minutes when I tried to fix my YLOD. I then did it again and it lasted 10 minutes, and again and then it lasted 5 minutes :(

Yeah, it really sucked. Cos first time, it seemed I had done what I thought was quite an achievement, I was over the moon. Stuck in little big planet, started playing, and ... beep beep beep!

Yeah, I'm hoping mine will last longer.... There's no telling.... It would really suck if it lasts a few hours / weeks....[QUOTE="_Matt_"][QUOTE="2eachhisownmask"] Oh hell.... Hardly worth the effort... That must suck....2eachhisownmask
