how far away do u think we are from seeing a price drop?Zero5000XI hope not for years. I paid and so should everyone else. If people can't afford the PS3 and the HDTV you need to appreciate it, then they can opt for a 360. For the cutting edge Blu-ray and the hardware potential, i say it's worth it.
They'll drop it as soon as they can.bdhoffthey could drop it right now if they wanted. but they wont, its selling just fine, they are the most reserved console in history, and it sold better at launch than both their previous systems. they have the cheaper cell processor, and took out the emotion engine, so its cheaper for them to make, but it just came out, at least a year and a half for price drop, and thats being optimistic.

It would be arrogant to think that they will continue to sell consistently at that price point forever simply because it is the PS3.

It would be arrogant to think that they will continue to sell consistently at that price point forever simply because it is the PS3. sony's entertainment division turned a huge profit, and they stopped losing money per console a while ago, read up on their news. both of M$'s boxes lost money when they came out, so did the PS2, its nothing new, they always sell them initially at a loss. stop buying into the media's BS, Sony still does this for the money, and they are still making it.
Sony is in a tight spot. It's selling too slowly right now to make their money back. They can either hope that it starts selling better once major exclusives arrive, and totally choke if it doesn't, or they can drop the price soon to make it sell better, but they'll lose so much money per console that they will not make money this gen. As it is, Sony has to sell 15-20 games per console to make up the $200 loss. If they were to drop the price, they would put that number into the unattainable range. Sony seems rather arrogant so I'm assuming that they will keep the price where it is, and risk it all.hecklemonkeythey arent losing money anymore, they are gaining now. they have removed the emotion engine, and reduced the production cost of the cell by a lot. they are no longer losing money on making the PS3, stop saying they are, cause they arent. 2nd, Sony and M$ both lost about the same on this gen per console, within about 30 bucks. Sony's is within reason to the box when you take into account inflation, and the fact that the box is over a year old.

Just because they removed the EE dosent mean they're automatically making money on every system now it only means they've lowered their cost per unit and right now this is only in europe as this version of the system isnt availible in the US or japan yet.Alpha2being as they said they are making money on each system, and their game department made a profit, by a large margin, i think they are doing fine

Sure, the entertainment division as a whole may be profitable, but that doesn't mean the PS3 isn't currently being sold at a loss.

You paid to get it early - if you want *games* to come for your system, you should root for a price drop. Like or not, the PS3 is an expensive piece of hardware, and at a certain point - probably in not much more than a year - the price *will* come down.

I'm guessing 6 months to compete with Halo 3. And Sony can afford it bec. I read in the newspapers that Blue Ray player prices will drop from $999 to $699 because of a new manufacturer, Toshiba. So in about 6 months I'll expect the PS3 to drop to around $549-$599CAN from $699CANÂ for the premium version, as the Blu Ray player is probably the most expensive part of the system.

Otherwise, just admit that you made it up and move on. http://www.gamespot.com/news/6148465.html there is the initial report showing that THE REASON they were losing so much per console is because of the intitial R&D involved for the components in the system. when a company factors their price, they factor in their R&D into the price of making it, because, you guessed it, thats part of what it took to make the originals. so the billion dollars they dumped on the cell and the rest, that had to be split up into each console as a loss. once the initial R&D price is made up, you make a profit. also factoring in the fact that all the things they are using for the ps3 have come down in price, and tada, we get a cheaper product. need another example? obviously you people seem a bit too young to remember how expensive ram for computers used to be, we are talking $200-300 for a 32 meg stick. the reason it was so expensive at first, cause of the R&D that initially goes into the design, the actual product itself costs them maybe a few dollars at best. if you actually believe it costs sony that much to build the PS3 or any other electronic device, then you are very self delusional. do you really think that the price to make a LCD and plasma TV has dropped upwards of 4 grand for the nice ones? plasma tvs have been around since the 60's and LCD has made debuts in many a calculator for years. sorry im not a link whore, i dont have a link for everything i read, but from the obvious facts, most of the losses in any electroinic are from R&D, not actual cost. balls in your court

actually the most expensive part of the system was the R&D for the Cell, that gets factored into the price, everyone seems to forget thishttp://www.gamespot.com/news/6148465.htmlthere is the initial report showing that THE REASON they were losing so much per console is because of the intitial R&D involved for the components in the system. when a company factors their price, they factor in their R&D into the price of making it, because, you guessed it, thats part of what it took to make the originals. so the billion dollars they dumped on the cell and the rest, that had to be split up into each console as a loss. once the initial R&D price is made up, you make a profit. also factoring in the fact that all the things they are using for the ps3 have come down in price, and tada, we get a cheaper product. need another example? obviously you people seem a bit too young to remember how expensive ram for computers used to be, we are talking $200-300 for a 32 meg stick. the reason it was so expensive at first, cause of the R&D that initially goes into the design, the actual product itself costs them maybe a few dollars at best. if you actually believe it costs sony that much to build the PS3 or any other electronic device, then you are very self delusional. do you really think that the price to make a LCD and plasma TV has dropped upwards of 4 grand for the nice ones? plasma tvs have been around since the 60's and LCD has made debuts in many a calculator for years. sorry im not a link whore, i dont have a link for everything i read, but from the obvious facts, most of the losses in any electroinic are from R&D, not actual cost. balls in your courtGzus666
Nothing you said proves that they are making a profit on system sales, much less breaking even on PS3's now. If they've been losing money per unit sold, then how could they have recovered the cost of their R&D? That's just not going to happen in three months. And component costs don't necessarily come down as quickly as you might believe, which shows that you lack even a basic understanding of economics and economies of scale. RAM was not initially expensive because of R&D. It was expensive because of what it cost to produce it. Few manufacturers and inefficient production processes kept prices high. As more and more producers entered the scene the cost went down because competition drove more efficient production processes and a surplus of production. For the PS3, there are very few producers of the components. There aren't half a dozen or more companies out there capable of making Cell chips. There aren't a dozen companies making blue laser diodes.
The reason that HDTV's are becoming less expensive is that more and more companies are making them. They've been out for years and it still costs a pretty big chunk of cash to get a good one. The reason PC's are less expensive is that more and more companies are making them and the components are standardized. Only one company makes the PS3, and it's a completely custom deal. Unless Sony's next quarterly report shows that they gaming division is pulling a profit, there's no way they are making money on hardware after three months.
