I hope not for years. I paid and so should everyone else. If people can't afford the PS3 and the HDTV you need to appreciate it, then they can opt for a 360. For the cutting edge Blu-ray and the hardware potential, i say it's worth it.

they could drop it right now if they wanted. but they wont, its selling just fine, they are the most reserved console in history, and it sold better at launch than both their previous systems. they have the cheaper cell processor, and took out the emotion engine, so its cheaper for them to make, but it just came out, at least a year and a half for price drop, and thats being optimistic.

If this gen is going to be anything like past gens, then don't expect a price drop for at least a year. Put it this way, for Sony to justify a price drop, the cost of making a PS3 has to go down, and Sony has to start MAKING money on each system sold. As of now, they are loosing something around $200 per console (if not more). But since they are switching to the emulated PS2 chip, they will be losing less. Eventually, the Cell/RSX/other components will cost less than they do now, Thus lowering the cost of manufacturing.

Generally when that happens, after a while of gaining profits, Sony (as any other company would) will pass the savings to the consumer, by lowering the price of the console. That could mean a $50 price drop, or a whole $100 drop. While doing this price drop now would absolutely sell more consoles, Sony would also be losing that much more money, making a second price drop improbable for YEARS. And also Sony would then have to find alternate means for gaining money off the console, IE charging for the online, or other such business tactics.

They can't drop it now. If they could they would. They have more price pressure on them than any other player. It would be arrogant to think that they will continue to sell consistently at that price point forever simply because it is the PS3.

sony's entertainment division turned a huge profit, and they stopped losing money per console a while ago, read up on their news. both of M$'s boxes lost money when they came out, so did the PS2, its nothing new, they always sell them initially at a loss. stop buying into the media's BS, Sony still does this for the money, and they are still making it.

Sony is in a tight spot. It's selling too slowly right now to make their money back. They can either hope that it starts selling better once major exclusives arrive, and totally choke if it doesn't, or they can drop the price soon to make it sell better, but they'll lose so much money per console that they will not make money this gen. As it is, Sony has to sell 15-20 games per console to make up the $200 loss. If they were to drop the price, they would put that number into the unattainable range. Sony seems rather arrogant so I'm assuming that they will keep the price where it is, and risk it all.

they arent losing money anymore, they are gaining now. they have removed the emotion engine, and reduced the production cost of the cell by a lot. they are no longer losing money on making the PS3, stop saying they are, cause they arent. 2nd, Sony and M$ both lost about the same on this gen per console, within about 30 bucks. Sony's is within reason to the box when you take into account inflation, and the fact that the box is over a year old.

since they are using a ps2 emulator instead of the hardware, does the newer ps3s still play all the ps2 games the older ps3s did?

Just because they removed the EE dosent mean they're automatically making money on every system now it only means they've lowered their cost per unit and right now this is only in europe as this version of the system isnt availible in the US or japan yet.

They aren't making money on each console. RSX + CELL + BluRay = 600 Com'on give me a break. RSX and BluRay Drives cost money. There's a reason why Samsungs BluRay player costs 900 dollars. It ain't because Samsung's cheap it's because new technology costs money. As it stands it probably costs 700 dollars for Sony to make a PS3 and 50 dollars to ship and package and distribute it across the globe. They're are losing money how do you expect them to drop the price. Anyone who thinks Sony is making money off PS3 sales is dilusional or has no grasp of technology. A stand alone BluRay drive costs 500 dollars. Open your eyes.

apparently you dont check prices of things, http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/DVD-Players-and-Recorders/sem/rpsm/Ntt/blu-ray/Ntk/All/catOid/-12872/N/0+21012872/link/ref/rpem/ccd/categorylist.do $689 dollars for the samsung BD player from a main chain, oh yea, those are right there at $900, boy, your on the ball. it doesnt cost sony 700 dollars to make a blu-ray drive, dont be silly. my god, what are you people teenagers? do you not have any idea how business works, or is this all new to yous? sony was losing about $220 on the 60gig WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT, BD players were $1000 or more at that time, they have come down about 40%, which means they found a way to make it a lot cheaper, that argument is done, you are wrong there. anyone else with a sensible argument? or is it just going to be made up facts and numbers with child based business theories?

I never said 700 just for BD ROM. I said it costs 700 for the whole PS3. You do realize there's more than a BluRay drive in a PS3 right. RSX = 7900 GTX Nividia + Cell = At least a Intel Core Processor + 60 Serial ata laptop HDD + Ram + BluRay Drive + Motherboard + Chassis You do the math. Looks like someone's never bought a PC before. If you're telling me you can get all those parts and put them together for under 700 you're insane. Then factor in shipping, taxes, global distro. Sony is losing at least 150 dollars on each PS3 PERIOD.

look up how much sony was losing per console, it was about $220 dollars give or take, your telling me they didnt trim $220 dollars out of the system? the players went down almost 40% by themselves. on top fo that, they were deciding these losses based off what it would cost to purchase all the items in the ps3 separate. when you buy things in bulk, like lets say millions, you tend to get them a lot cheaper. they have removed the emotion engine for the euro launch, thats over a million consoles easy without the EE. the cell processor is being made cheaper. i dont know where you get this "probably" cost, but your not good at estimating. 360 took a similar loss at start up, thats how it is, the initial investment is large, cause you dont have a lot made, but once you start producing large amounts, and find ways to reduce production costs after the initial technologies have got past their initial R&D cost. to assume a company as large as Sony would place a $600 price tag, then immediately reduce it is just a dumb statement based off NO clear evidence, and nothing more than media hype. show an announcement, and we will go from there, otherwise, your basically talking out of your ass

I'd sure like to see where you read that Sony isn't losing money on each PS3 sold. Sure, the entertainment division as a whole may be profitable, but that doesn't mean the PS3 isn't currently being sold at a loss.

"I paid ans so should everyone else" is the exact negative attitude I've seen from almost all 360 and PS3 owners. You paid to get it early - if you want *games* to come for your system, you should root for a price drop. Like or not, the PS3 is an expensive piece of hardware, and at a certain point - probably in not much more than a year - the price *will* come down.

highly doubt it will drop, until i see some sort of sign from sony, i wont buy into the media hype that it will drop. and on a side note, could you fix your sig, its anointed, not "annoited" its driving me nuts for some reason :)

I'm guessing 6 months to compete with Halo 3. And Sony can afford it bec. I read in the newspapers that Blue Ray player prices will drop from $999 to $699 because of a new manufacturer, Toshiba. So in about 6 months I'll expect the PS3 to drop to around $549-$599CAN from $699CAN for the premium version, as the Blu Ray player is probably the most expensive part of the system.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6148465.html there is the initial report showing that THE REASON they were losing so much per console is because of the intitial R&D involved for the components in the system. when a company factors their price, they factor in their R&D into the price of making it, because, you guessed it, thats part of what it took to make the originals. so the billion dollars they dumped on the cell and the rest, that had to be split up into each console as a loss. once the initial R&D price is made up, you make a profit. also factoring in the fact that all the things they are using for the ps3 have come down in price, and tada, we get a cheaper product. need another example? obviously you people seem a bit too young to remember how expensive ram for computers used to be, we are talking $200-300 for a 32 meg stick. the reason it was so expensive at first, cause of the R&D that initially goes into the design, the actual product itself costs them maybe a few dollars at best. if you actually believe it costs sony that much to build the PS3 or any other electronic device, then you are very self delusional. do you really think that the price to make a LCD and plasma TV has dropped upwards of 4 grand for the nice ones? plasma tvs have been around since the 60's and LCD has made debuts in many a calculator for years. sorry im not a link whore, i dont have a link for everything i read, but from the obvious facts, most of the losses in any electroinic are from R&D, not actual cost. balls in your court

actually the most expensive part of the system was the R&D for the Cell, that gets factored into the price, everyone seems to forget this

there is the initial report showing that THE REASON they were losing so much per console is because of the intitial R&D involved for the components in the system. when a company factors their price, they factor in their R&D into the price of making it, because, you guessed it, thats part of what it took to make the originals. so the billion dollars they dumped on the cell and the rest, that had to be split up into each console as a loss. once the initial R&D price is made up, you make a profit. also factoring in the fact that all the things they are using for the ps3 have come down in price, and tada, we get a cheaper product. need another example? obviously you people seem a bit too young to remember how expensive ram for computers used to be, we are talking $200-300 for a 32 meg stick. the reason it was so expensive at first, cause of the R&D that initially goes into the design, the actual product itself costs them maybe a few dollars at best. if you actually believe it costs sony that much to build the PS3 or any other electronic device, then you are very self delusional. do you really think that the price to make a LCD and plasma TV has dropped upwards of 4 grand for the nice ones? plasma tvs have been around since the 60's and LCD has made debuts in many a calculator for years. sorry im not a link whore, i dont have a link for everything i read, but from the obvious facts, most of the losses in any electroinic are from R&D, not actual cost. balls in your courtGzus666

Nothing you said proves that they are making a profit on system sales, much less breaking even on PS3's now. If they've been losing money per unit sold, then how could they have recovered the cost of their R&D? That's just not going to happen in three months. And component costs don't necessarily come down as quickly as you might believe, which shows that you lack even a basic understanding of economics and economies of scale. RAM was not initially expensive because of R&D. It was expensive because of what it cost to produce it. Few manufacturers and inefficient production processes kept prices high. As more and more producers entered the scene the cost went down because competition drove more efficient production processes and a surplus of production. For the PS3, there are very few producers of the components. There aren't half a dozen or more companies out there capable of making Cell chips. There aren't a dozen companies making blue laser diodes.

The reason that HDTV's are becoming less expensive is that more and more companies are making them. They've been out for years and it still costs a pretty big chunk of cash to get a good one. The reason PC's are less expensive is that more and more companies are making them and the components are standardized. Only one company makes the PS3, and it's a completely custom deal. Unless Sony's next quarterly report shows that they gaming division is pulling a profit, there's no way they are making money on hardware after three months.

[QUOTE="Gzus666"][QUOTE="pimperjones"][QUOTE="Gzus666"][QUOTE="pimperjones"]They aren't making money on each console.

Buy a million a the prices come down are you insane. Name one company besides IBM thats able to supply Sony with CELL chips, name one company besides Nvidia thats able to supply Sony with RSX cards. You really think IBM and Nividia is gonna lower there bottom line just cause Sony says so. Give me a break, you think ROM drive manufacturers are gonna take a hit on BluRay Drive profits because Sony buys a million. Please. Before you ask others for proof why don't you show some common sense. You think Sony is cutting back costs on emotion engines production because they are happily making money. Let me tell you when a company announces hardware cut backs right before a major launch its because they are losing money not because they're rolling in profits. P.S Why don't you go to the store and see how much a Nvidia 7900 GTX + BluRay ROM Drive + 60 gig laptop HDD + Intel Core Processor costs before you start spreading your BS.
