Any pc gamer knows that when you purchase next gen hardware your computer is capable of many new things. You can now play great graphic games at high resolutions and for quite some time, BUT there comes the brick wall. At a certain point you start having to lower your resolution to get certain games to work.

Heres an example. People who owned an 8800 GTX were playing all their top quality titles at 1900 x 1200 or some really high resolution and then Crysis came out. Now at the most you will see them play at 1280 x 1024 and its "just" playable.

So my question is when will Sony and Microsoft devs hit that limit where they just cant produce any more without lowering the resolution? Also have they hit the limit already? Look at todays games not even half of them are played at the resolution they have on the back. COD4 Halo 3 GT5 and the list goes on. So i believe the real question isn't if HD will die but when will it die? Before or after a newer console comes out? Or will games stay at a level of video quality and stop improving because they promised us HD gaming? Please share your opinion.

While I am not big on technology, it doesn't seem like the same rules would apply... but if they do, then I guess they will have to come out with TVs capable of custom resolution.

Consoles are exactly like pc's. The only difference is consoles have software developed specifically for there hardware rather then optimizing for plenty of hardware on pc's. Yes uncharted does look brilliant but its the begging of the Ps3's lfie cycle. When sony devs can produce better visuals that require mroe cpu, gpu, and ram it becomes ALOT harder to play at higher resolutions.

Also look at Uncharted again. Do you know the difference between Graphics and HD? HD is just the resolution nothing more. What you are looking at are the graphics. When you look at most current games that are really sharp thats the resolution. Comprende? So Uncharted looks amazing but why do you think the game isnt TRUE 1080p if the game was capable of it? It may strecth to 1080p but thats not real 1080p. The higher the resolution the more it takes out of your gpu/ram. So when visual quality becomes even better how are they going to be able to keep the resolution at a consistant 720p.

Devs CAN produce better visuals if they wanted right now, the matter is they're not experienced enough to have it run at a smooth frame rate in 720p. So as time goes on, we're going to see those improvements, in HD.

Um no, it's the opposite for consoles. The devs work to push the hardware, not to push the limit and hope people buy the hardware to run it.

Games will keep getting better and better, think about how the games on the PS2 got better and better. As time moves on the dev's will learn new tricks to squeze more and more out of the PS3

Yeah, consoles don't have that problem. The dev's know the hardware that they are coding the game for, and optimize the game to run for it, unlike the moving target pc. Games don't start magically looking more and more horrible on consoles as they get older, for the most part they tend to look better as the console ages.

You ask a question and then scold the guy who gives you the best answer. So basically, shut up, and let us console gamers worry about games, AND ONLY GAMES. We buy consoles so we don't have to care about any hardware BS

So you're saying that developers will want to start putting out PS3 and 360 games that are too advanced for PS3s and 360s to handle? That flies in the face of the entire history of console gaming. Developers will optimize games for the current hardware for 5-7 years, and then move on when the next wave of consoles arrive. It's not that novel a concept.

this gen 720p will be the sweet spot, and as you said some games get lower resolutions like halo3 COD4, those games don't look that goodhalo3, and cod4 has lower poly count than COD3 but looks better. as time goes on they will learn how to get more out of the systems with less or the same resorces. Consoles have better chance then PC only because they devlop for that system and not the max pc setup and then the low end at the same time. Im sure the more they learn 720p will just be it, some may get more out of a 640p then upscale it to 720p but most ppl wont even care or notis

In less then two years time HD will be obsolete.......XHDscreens have already begun to make their way on the shelves.....with their 2024x1600 resolution they basically desitegrate FullHD televisions....the first models are expected to be found with the new LaserTVs by Toshiba due next year.....oh and by the way they will all be 16:10 ratio....

Also doesn't the high capacity of blue ray give developers more room to work with?

Wow i respect all of your opinions but what im trying to say is i know the ps3 can produce alot better then what is being produced right now without a doubt. The thing is that as polycount starts getting higher regardless if its being optimized for ps3 only it becoems harder and harder for it to run at higher resolutions whether that time has some now or will come by the end of the timeline is the only question. No consoles just as pc's are not miracles. They last logner because as most of you pointed out dev's develope specifically for that console and can push it further then an equivalent pc hardware. At one point you might be able to produce Uncharted time 3 in visual quality but would the dev's seriiously be able to play it at 1280 x 720? Like would you guys care if we had near realistic graphics but in 480p? or have limited graphics but at 720p?

we will not decrease at all from hd status...that is where the US is headed, in a few years no more air waves, all digital everything will soon be hd and the norm, tv prices are falling drastically becuase everyone is getting them, its becoming standard

hd gaming is gonna last as long as tube tv gaming did, before the next and the greatest is out but until that we have hd tv

February 2009, US Law is making all TV broadcasting digital, I'll be here sooner than you think, almost next year even.

The fact that games are allowed to be in HD for consoles now does not change the fact that games will continue to look better and better.

For example, resistance and ratchet. Both games from the same developer, Resistance could only run 720p at 30fps, while ratched runs 720p 60 fps AND looks way better. Also, Ratchet and clank was made only in like a year.. AMAZING.

We can expect to see Resistance 2 probably next november with their track record on the ps3.
