I was doing it a lot when I was working a lot.  Now that I am on layoff from one job (dont worry I knew it was coming, its a 3 month vacation :) )

I ran it for almost a week solid, seems safe.  But then I got my power bill.  Between the AC, the PC doing its own distrib projects and the PS3 I racked up over 750 Kwh.  Ouch!

The problem's the AC.  Stop running the AC and get a) A concubine, and b) Some palm fronds.  Thank me later. :D

I live in a effincy apt and with the PS3 going and the PC going and the heat outside it can get over 80F in this place.  Almost have to run the AC just so my PS3 does not burn up (exit temp from the PS3 after house of Folding in an un-ACd room can run 115-117F)

During the winter it wont be an issue. The PC + PS3 is still cheaper then running the electric heat.

Its the distributed computing project Folding@Home that runs on the PS3 (also runs on the PC and Unix).  After the upgrade in April I believe the option showed up in the Network XMB tab.  You let it install then set up a username, and you can join a team.

The PS3 downloads a workunit (or "fold" as people have taken to calling them) and does the work, then sends the results back to the server.  They call it Folding since the project involves studying how proteins fold and how mis folds can lead to diseases, like cancer or Alzheimer's.

I have completed about 95 WUs since April 20.  The PS3 can do about 2-3 a day where as it would take my PC 3 days to do just 1!  My only rule is I dont run it when I think its going to storm bad when I am gone, dont want lightning messing up my PS3.

I refuse to leave my ps3 on when no one is home just in case something bad happens. I'd hate to come home to a smoldering crater on the off chance. However, If I am home and not playing video games, the consol is folding its little heart out.

The only small issue I have noticed and this may have NOTIHNG to do with FaH, is that a couple times when I told it to quit Folding it took a LONG time to get back to the XMB.  Now the 2 times this happened also happen to be the 2 times my router has decided to stop sending stuff to the Internet, so that could be part of it.  And also the FaH app may have needed to save something to the HD.  No biggie.

I don't do Folding@home that much tbh :( I soemtiems leave it on when watchinga film on Sky tv but that's about it really. It;s a worthy cause and everything but it seems a waste of power and money :(

Ade.

I have 2 days a week (or more if its storming) that I shut off EVERYTHING.  PC, PS3, AC, FAN, everything.  Should be able to get down to under 500 kwh I think.  I was gone for about a month this spring and I left the PC on doing ClimatePrediction and my power bill was only about 250kwh.  I did not have anything else on, even shut off the water heater (its electric).  Only other thing that was on was the fridge.

So the PC is not too bad for power, the AC is killing my
