How often do PS3s break down? Are they worth it?

I'm not sure if this goes under console wars, but it really does only pertain to PS3.

I never really hear about PS3s breaking as much as 360s do. Come to think of it, I've never heard of someone having to ship their console out for weeks to have it fixed. (Multiple times even)

I just got off the hotline from hell with M$, and I have to say I am completly fed up with them. This is the 3rd time my console has died, this time with no forwarning. Although the service is free under warranty, it is a royal pain in A to deal with them and ship it out to just recieve another one that is great. I've always been a Sony guy, I've never really been satisfied with my failBoX.

Putting all of that aside, I feel like PS3s are pretty sturdy, (PS2 never gave me issues), and the game line up is looking pretty solid right now with MGS4, LBP, GT5, and really anything on the 360- most exclusives on the 360 become disappointing after the hype dies down. Not to mention laggy online, annoying kids...etc...

What I'm really getting to is, I want a PS3. Im just wondering how often if ever do they ever break down?

PS3s are pretty solidly built. I wouldn't worry about their reliability too much. They are certainly built better than the previous Playstations and better than the competition this generation. If you are planning on buying one, reliablility really isn't something to worry about.

to my understanding, the only ps3 that is having problems right now is the 2 year old 60gb launch version. some are reporting ylod(yellow light of death). but even still, its not nearly the 33% of all systems microsoft produced. i've had my ps3 for a year now...traveled with it(from my house to fiance's, from fiance's to a 14 hour plane to alaska, from a dorm room in AK to a house a month later) and i've had 0 problems with it.

Sounds like they run pretty well, just as I thought.

Im curious about backwards compatibility also. I love Final Fantasy X but I read on the newer models you can't play PS2 games. Arent' their firmware downloads for this?

Only the older 60gb models can currently play PS2 and PS1 games

They very rarely break and are 100% worth every penny... arguably expensive, but I firmly believe you get what you pay for with the PS3

So buy one.

My PS3 would not read disks after a year and 2 months and thanks to there fantastik warranty a had to $100

to get it fixed at some game store in my city. He gets way more PS3 then 360 in for repaire he told me. but that

is most likely due to the 3 year warranty microsft gives

And the original 20gb's and some of the first 80gbs had software emulation, so you have 2 backwards comp. units to choose from

I definitly plan on buying one soon hehe. I also plan on recreating the scene from the move Office Space with my 360, where they take the copier out into the field and obliterate it. :) I think i'll feel more safe with PS3. I can't wait already.

I just bought an 80G about 6 months ago and I have never had any problems, while all my friends 360's have broken down, and yes they 80gbs do play Ps2 games. Also my little brother has had a Ps3 since they first came out and the thing still works like the day it was first bought.

I'm Sorry Man wish i could tell you that you could but you can't, that download from the store was for 20, 60, and first wave of 80gb. it allows you to install games ps2 games on hdd. e.g. ffxi.. etc. If you really want a BC machine your going to have to get a 20,60 or an 80gb motostorm bundle (first game)

Edit to last post I meant 3 ( you have 3 bc machines to choose from).

I am also fed up with microsoft. yesterday my 360 got E74 error and when i called microsoft they told me that i have to pay $100 dollars for something that is hardware problem. My Ps3 have not given me a single problem. So Ps3 is the way to go.

There is currently no way to play PS2 games on the new 80GB or 160GB systems. There is no firmware update to add backwards compatibility. Your only options for a backwards compatible system are to track down a 60GB or a 20GB system, or find an 80GB Motorstorm bundle. Those will be very tough to find at a reasonable price, so I'd suggest that you hang onto your PS2 for your old games.

I have the 60GB system, and while it's nice to have the option to play my old games, I rarely do. When the system launched, I spent a lot of time playing my old games like Okami, SotC, GoW2, and FFXII, but that was only because there weren't a whole lot of games to choose from. Now there are so many great games for PS3 that I have a hard time going back to play older games. I haven't played a PS2 game since January of this year. We've seen a pretty steady release of games, like Burnout Paradise, DMC4, GTA4, MGS4, Hot Shots Golf, GT5:Prologue, LittleBigPlanet, Motorstorm: PR, Resistance 2, CoD:WaW, Prince of Persia... etc.

They're very reliable, i've had mine near enough a year and it's been good so far.
I think as long as you take care of them, both the 360+Ps3 will last long :)

they break down all the time, they are less reliable than the 360 and ps2 combined. I've had 6 and i've only had it 3 months, do not buy this console, go for a wii. no not really it's a fine piece of tech, that delivers on all fronts like a big breasty blonde from sweden.

Well, per my experience, units I'd had to replace (as in, they broke down, so I had to buy another one...): PlayStation - 2 (was about to buy a 4th when the ps2 came out and I had enough $$$ to get that instead) PlayStation2 - 2 (on my third) PS3 (60GB) - 3 (on my FOURTH) Xbox 360 - 1 (hard drive failure-induced RRoD, but BB's replacement plan had me replace the whole thing) Xbox - 1 (didn't bother replacing, since I got the 360 shortly after) DS - 1 (freak accident that snapped off the power switch) Dreamcast - 1 (after 6.5 years of abuse, it finally tanked; but my g/f helped me get two more to replace it :D ) Simply put, I've had to replace more Sony consoles than I'd had to replace consoles from any other company; period, full stop. Probably part of the reason I'm so afraid to get any new ps3 games is for the fear this one will just tank on me, too.

I've folded over 750 WU's on folding@home (which is about 4500 hours cpu grunt work) and obviously playing games a lot on top of that and my PS3 is still going strong. I would not do this on my Xbox; that's for sure. It's a well designed machine and it will last.

I got my PS3 in march 2007, i don't have any problems despite playing eight hours straight online, the PS3 is worthy the cash and if you don't play Metal Gear Solid 4 and Little Big Planet, you will be missing out great games, they also got great online gameplay.

Original 60GB owner since day one and really havent had any problems with it. There's been some freezing every once in awhile with games; such as, GTAIV / CoD4 / Madden 09, but I'm sure it was because of the First day releases of some of them (patches probably fixed it).

Very reliable console and if well taken care of it should last you all 10 years of it's life time. Ive recently installed a bigger HDD and still works like a champ!

The BC was cool at first (Like others said, first year), but I haven't touched FFX or any other PS1/PS2 game since Jan. or Feb. There are so many great games out that I play; don't have time to go back old gen. Most of the exclusives are awesome this gen for Sony and plus the Trophy support is getting better (if you like that kind of thing...). "Resistance" franchise is pretty sweet (both because they have there uniquness with one another), "MGS4" (Tradition), LBP (Adorable and creative), "Uncharted" franchise is superb (Adventure plus some kick a** graphics), "GT5" (Tradition), "GoW3" (Tradition).

Well of course you know about the Multi-plats, and of course free online (which is another great thing to purchase games for the Ps3.

The 80 G (CECHEO1) Metal Gear Solid 4 model also plays some PS2 games. The 20 G (CECHB01) plays PS2 games but does not have WiFi.

60 G (CECHA01) plays all PS2.

The models that do not are the new 160 G (Uncharted), the 40 G (CECHG01 or CECHH01) and the new 80 G (CECHK01). Those are the serial numbers in case you buy one used.

I failed to mention that I prefer the PS3 over the 360 any day of the year. I had my 360 for less than a year and it failed. Getting it replaced under warranty was more than a problem for Microsoft and their customer service is horrendous. I've never had so much as a wee bit problem with my PS3 and my friends have never experienced anything in terms of hardware problems. You can do more with the PS3 than you are able to with the 360. And it has an outstanding bluray player, imo.

rarely if ever. PS3 are made to last. pretty much every 360 eventually gets a red ring of death (the only reason the failure rate is at 33% is because they keep selling so many new ones)

The fail rate is really low, below 1% i believe, none of my friends have had any problems with their ps3's. I've had mine since march 07 and I've had absolutely no problems, and there was a period in time where i used to use that folding@home program a lot, which uses all your processing power, etc. and I used to do that for weeks at a time without turning off my ps3, and even after weeks of constant folding, it was still cool to the touch, and as I've stated I haven't had any problems.

Bought mine a month after the initial release. 60GB. Works like magic, never crashed or gliched. Did not turn it off for hell knows how long now (clocking over few months).

XBOX Jasper systems gotta be better (as far as I hear, I work at EB Games (canadian gamestop)), but we still see a lotta ppl buying the arcade cuz their xbox died. I never heard of PS3 dying thou.

Backwards comp. is an issue, the new 80gb and 160gb won't run anything from PS1 or 2. Ebay the 60gb it is worth every dollar.

Just don't go and hit your ps3 with a hammer and you'll be fine. I think that the people who are experiencing problems with their ps3s are the ones who don't take care of it very well (dusting the ps3 occasionally, giving it plenty of breathing room, etc).

Well from my experience (and mines is an imported JP version), reliability is second to none! I mean, most that hate on the PS3 as far as always complaining about its price point really fail to understand that you really do get what you pay for. And for most PS3 owners, that a sturdy, reliable, and low maintenance gaming (and overall media, counting Blu-Ray!) experience. While I'm sure PS3 do breakdown, the percentage compared to....oh, say the 360--is marginal. Now for the BC, you'll probably have to do some sort of Googling or Ebay searching to the said models of BC PS3s that some have mentioned, as of now the current SKUs have all but weened it out.

But, honestly, as some have said really after about a year of having it, or less, most PS3 owners hardly backtrack to play older PS2 games (I never had the BC version anyway and still kept my PS2 so it was a big deal w/ me to begin w/). Most people in the beginning that talked all that BC was when the PS3 still lacked heavy hitting titles; but in past year or 2--especially this year--that has changed dramatically. I'd definitely say now's a hellagood time to invest in a PS3. ;)

If the PS3 has 4 USB ports, then it's BC which are the 20GB, 60GB and early 80GB here's a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3 scroll down to the chart, very noticeable

from what i've read it seems that some of the launch models recently have had issues. but MOST launch models for systems have these problems alot more significantly then the PS3 has had so far. But i would say with the amount of time passed the new units available on the market now should be pretty much free of any of these issues (for now).

I had my PS3 for just over 12 months and was unfortunate enough to have it break down. I blame this mainly on extreme over-use, I would sometimes leave it running all day and barely touch it, and the weather is pretty hot where I live too. I believe it is pretty reliable, but not invincible, so as long as it is smartly taken care of, it should have no serious problems. It was a fantastic 12 months I had with it!

There's also the more recent 80GB MGS4 bundle, which came out in June. This was the last of the BC units sold.

hell ya they're worth it. they next to never break down. ive had mine for over a year now and the worst problem i had was it signed me out of paystation network so i had to sign in. it took three seconds to fix. its pretty expensive but its worth every cent and has some of the best exclusives ever like killzone 2, little big planet, resistance 2, warhawk, and the godly Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots (best game ever). u wont have a problem so go out and buy it

Sony products are very reliable. I'm 36 and I've had PS1, PS2, and now 3 PS3s and I've never had anything fail. However I had a 360 that got a failed HDD and then RRoD.

I definitly plan on buying one soon hehe. I also plan on recreating the scene from the move Office Space with my 360, where they take the copier out into the field and obliterate it. :) I think i'll feel more safe with PS3. I can't wait already.Beetroot502
Well I brought a 60GB PS3 back in 2007 I now it's has really come alive, now in 2009. (another thing to think about is this... The PS3 is still the most advanced console on the market. It has a Blu-ray drive built in Wi-fi and motion sensing bluetooth controllers. The PS3 won't be obsolite for quite a while the Wii and the 360 are already obsolite. 98% of the Wii's games suck, an look like some thing t of the atari 2600. The 360 has better games, well more games but they are not reliable. And now 90% of the games the 360 has the PS3 gets at the same time. The games on the PS3 that take advantage of it. ARE FRICKEN AMAZING!!!!) ps also the PS3 will have the longest life span out of the 3.

I've had my PS3 for a long time now, and apart from the occasional badly looked after game, it has never crashed, broken down, frozen in place, or any crap like that, they are built pretty damn well.
