Right first of all Sony took the BC model off the market (60gb) because it was not selling well. That is pretty much a fact.

Now people want BC back for the PS3. I can understand why that is. But the reason they haven't put it through a firmware update or put in back in the PS3's when their built is for two possible reasons. 1.) A possible loss for Sony 2.) They can sell more PS2 units.

Now say the answer to non BC is answer two. This means they are making more money because people still wanna play their PS2 games and need a PS2 to do so. Well most of you would have heard the rumour that a firmware update this October(ish) could bring back BC. Well think about this, at the time that update comes out PS2's could possibly be off the market (very very unlikely). This is pretty much when Christmas shopping begins so your gonna have all sorts of people buying PS3's for sons, daughters, grand children, husbands etc when people hear BC has been brought back in, Sony can then raise the price of the PS3 and and possibly make a huge profit.

Well we all know there is no PS2 BC because... 1.) Sony still want more money from the PS2 2.) Their Lazy

Lol.

This could be an answer but it's very likely it's not the answer. To non BC and the rumoured BC firmware update and how Sony are making more money.

So you think Sony would rather that the customer buy the lower end Playstation instead of the PS3? That makes no sense whatsoever. Of course they would put in BC in the PS3 with an update, but it probably won't happen without any PS2 hardware. And do not even pretend like Sony are lazy, it costs money to develop things and they have other priorities. With BC gone, the price can also be lowered due to not needing to put another expensive part into it

It's def. possible but they should focus on PS3 now!! If people are buying PS2's instead then it's not helping the PS3 catch up in the console wars. I've heard of a lot of people that didn't buy a PS3 because it didn't have bc. They thought they'd be wasting all of their PS2 games (one of these is my aunt).

I bet you when ps2 sales slow down they wll update the ps3 to have backwards compatibility and sell games through PSN. there is too much money to be made there for them not to do this however its doesn't make sense to do it now because the you can still find PS2 games around every corner. Pretty much when the only place to find PS2 games is ebay is when we are going to get BC on new PS3's.

The rumour is that once bc is totally phased out this year, Sony is going to start offering PS2 games via download on the PSN store. Like they do with PS1 games now.

Bad rumour. not because I can confirm that it's not true, but it doesn't make any sense. Any game that you can play on the PS3 for PS1/PS2 even without BC via hardware is made possible by emulation. From a cost standpoint it makes absolutely no sense to keep BC in the hardware. PS3 is more than up to the challenge to support BC via emulation. There is also an advantage to software emulation. Tweaks "drivers" can be added for games that don't fully run with the "vanilla" emulation. This is what's done in MAME and other popular emulators. Emulation can also offer enhancements that running on the raw hardware wouldn't be possible. All this garbage about BC being gone seems a bit nitpicky. Believe it or not, people that are adamant about BC are the minority. Why raise the price for everyone else when you can sit tight and wait for emulation?

my 2cents.

So, you spent $400 to play ps2 games, instead of $130 for an actual PS2? That's just dumb.

I think most people would rather play PS3 games than PS2 games. I bought the 60GB so I could play the 20 or so PS2 games that I kept, and I haven't really played anything since all my time has been spent playing Resistance, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Burnout Paradise, MGS4 and Rock Band on PS3.

Backwards compatability is nice, but hardly a selling point anymore. Most people would rather just save $100 and keep their PS2s for PS2 games.

Sony wants to make $ from the PS3. In the beginning Sony was willing to give its customers the BC that they wanted, but we consumers were not willing to pay the price for it -- so Sony dropped it. It is a cost issue for Sony, not a ploy to sell more PS2s.

I think Sony made the wrong call on BC -- once the decision was made to have BC, they should have stuck with it. They just caused a lot of consumer confusion and even some bad will over the whole BC isssue. I hope the software BC fix rumor is true. I think that will help PS3 sales, although it may be a little too little, a little too late at this point.

There is no reason to think the rumour about software BC isn't true. You can download PS2 and PS1 games via PSN. Those are emulated or else they just wouldn't work for people anymore once Hardware BC is gone. PS1 most certainly. why? because you can play your downloaded PS1 games on your PSP. PSP doesn't have PS1 hardware in it.

Yes i do agree with some of the people that stated it PS3's are for PS3 games. Hence the name PS3. But c'mon it would be sweet if they had BC. I really do hope that update is true.

Well, it seems to me that a total emulation would be a bit processor intensive. The software BC right now is not a true software emulation. You have one part of the PS2 system hardwired in(can't recall of the top of my head right now which). The 20 and 60GB both have the CPU and GPU(emotion engine) hardwired on the motherboard.

The 80GB with BC has the software BC but like I said they still have one of the two PU's on the motherboard. It only emulates ONE processing unit. The PS3 IMO doesn't have the capability to truly emulate both. They are barely able to emulate the PS1.

Reliable NES emulators didn't really come out till almost 10 years after the system was discontinued. Most PCs didn't have the capability of even running that small chip-set in emulation until mid 2001. True emulation is not as easy a thing to do, at least to do it well. Sorry to get long winded, especially on my first post lol.

First of all, wrong. 80GB noncore still had BC, been having it, and it was selling well. If they upgrade the HDD doesn't mean the old one was not selling.
