I wanna try it out before the third one comes out, but I don't have an Xbox and I hate playing on PC, so the PSN release is tempting. Is this version really as bad as I've heard though? Unplayable?

Its "good", but much more dated then, say, MGS2 or so. If its the PS2 version we're experiencing, then it will be full of load times and the controls might be finicky.

If they can improve the levels and textures to the PC version standard (which was lead platform then), then it would still be a bit finicky in controls but otherwise be well worth it.

Either way, the worst version of Max Payne, while dated, is worth playing.

The PS2 is by far the worst version of Max Payne out there. Add to that some likely glitches and performance issues from it being a PS2 classic and I'd steer clear. Even the Xbox version, which is playable, is still a far cry from the PC version as those games feel like PC games - the gamepad controls are awkward at best.

I bought both Max Payne 1+2 to play on my 60gb PS3 back at launch and honestly i enjoyed both very much! I had played the PC versions previously but still enjoyed the PS2 games immensely. So if you cant play on a PC you will still enjoy the game on PS2 Classic.

The controls are abit clunky but otherwise I managed to get through it with minimal problems.

The great story/atmosphere of the game far outweighs its issues and is definitely worth playing.

Seems fine to me. Here's a review from GS for the PS2 version.

The worst thing is the framerate which is really bad. The controls are quite clunky for some of the jumping/platforming and annoying sections where you have to walk across beams or dodge lasers, etc. It's just as fun as it was 11 years ago other than that so go for it.

I had it on ps2 years ago and loved it. A little glitchy at times but nothing game breaking.
