The PS3 does 7.1 in blu ray movies, 5.1 in games. If your using the PS3 just as a blu ray player, splash the extra and go for 7.1, but if its mainly gaming and DVDs with the odd blu ray stick with 5.1. If your looking to hook all that up your best bet is probably something from the logitech z-5xxx series.

Actually while some of the games do do true/discrete 7.1, most of the movies don't. Whatever receiver you use will basically convert/simulate 7.1 surround sound... similar to what PLIIx does.

With surround sound systems there are so many options some expensive and some inexpensive. The main thing to remember is make sure it has at least a optical input for surround sound. I have been useing a 5.1 for a while now and now kinda wish I went with a 7.1 system with duel HDMI inputs and one HDMI output.

I reccomend you get an hdmi reciever. Though as they're really expensive, you may have to stick with optical. Make sure it at least has optical, or your 5.1 experience isn't happening.
