You download it off your computer and put it on. If you look in the xmb on your ps3, you'll see it says "Install other OS"
You have to partition your drive (erases everything, so you'll need to back up your data)
Search around for step by step instructions.
Do I have to backup my data? I mean...If it were to Just delete the Game Saves and Updates...I'm cool with that...All I do these days is play Online...and any other game I have, I've already beaten...No point in keeping useless saves.... What I'm trying to ask is...Would it delete anything else? I just don't want to end up with a $500 paperweight Also, Would It be possible to download Linux on the internet through my PS3?You download it off your computer and put it on. You can't get linux from your PS3. It'd just delete saves and demos and if you have music or movies or anything on the harddrve. If you don't need to back it up, you're fine.

Maybe that's a better one. It's for Yellow Dog linux.
You actually DON'T have to format your HDD when installing Linux. If you have more than 10 GB available on the HDD, then it will partition the drive and begin installation of Linux.
You can download Linux distributions online, but you need to burn them onto a DVD first to install it. Yellow Dog Linux is the "official" PS3 distribution of Linux.
I had Linux on my PS3, but took it off because I didn't use it that much. I would rather have 10 extra gigs of hard drive space on my PS3. Right now it is kind of crippled because only 256 MB of RAM is used to power Linux. The other 256 MB of RAM found on the RSX is NOT accessible by Linux. Perhaps this will change in the future. Sony does have the option to do so at a later time...
If and when they decide to "unlock" the PS3, I will upgrade my HDD and check it out again.
