Hi, im a newbie at this tv stuff, but im really confused and slightly frustrated. i just purchased a Sanyo 42 inch HDTV so i cud get better graphics for my games, and it turns out, when i plugged everything in and set up the TV with the PS3, all thats really changed from my old 22 inch monitor is how big it looks. thats it. i look at my brothers lcd 22 inch monitor and he has better graphics (HD of course) than i do with my new 42 inch TV! How the hell does that work? I've tried all the display settings i cud in the Playstation XMB, but the onlysetting that i know of that has any significant difference is the one where it asks if its HDMI, Composite, or other connection and then asks for either automatic or custom (automatic meaning 420, 720, 1080i, and 1080p) and lastly the audio output.

Can anybody help me? I do not want to regret purchasing this HDTV, becuz it cost me close to 500 dollars.

if hdmi not working as it should try replace them with other hdmi cable, or try the red green blue component cable..but if u can hdmi is ur priority..if u have multiple output on your tv try the other output as well, check the cable is not loose...happened to me once i thought my tv or ps3 is broken coz all i got is green screen..googled everything only to found out that the hdmi cable is dodgy. set video settng to 1080i, ur tv may not be compatible for 1080p therefore it is downgrading the quality instead of upgrading..if you plugged in the hdmi do not plug in the red white and yellow cable.. theres a youtube tutorial for bluray and general video setting that maximise visual experience..i dont have the link but try search it on youtube.

Go to custom and select all resolutions(480,720,1080i,1080p), it should pick up the 720p res once you start the game

^no, it did not look better on MY 22 inch SD monitor. my brother and i compared graphics from my FIFA10 on the 42 inch HDTV to his 22 inch HD lcd monitor, and his is so much clearer. i hate to be picky, but i did buy an HD screen didnt i? so why should i not have HD? i have the HDMI cable, everything is set up rite, i hav played around with the very limited display settings that the PS3 has and it sets it automatic at 1080p becuz that is the clearest res by far, the rest of the resolutions have jaggies and make things look fuzzy. but i mean, this is ridiculous! I should not have to do anything, it should be in HD

did you hold the power button, or put your finger over the power button depend on what you got, until you here a beep? That usually take care of the cable you are using, and it does a automatic setup, if that doesn't work, make sure to change the setting on the tv, some tv does not automaticly change accouding to the input you have

Have you got the ps3 RGB range to full?

Also try a different cable. If this doesn't work take the TV back as my Dad had a Bravia that had a dodgy HDMI imput.

Your TV is Full HD right? If not, forcing the 1080p setting maybe making it slightly distorted. Set it manually to 720p and see what happens.

I was talking about the 22" LCD. Not your 22" CRT.

^ok, i understand, but even still, my brother's22 inch lcd has HD and he has an HDMI cable so he has perfect picture like you see in the optimal resolution gameplay videos here at gamespot. yes, i know that my new TV is almost double the size, but still, it is HD compatible and I also have an HDMI cable so there should be no problem with this new screen to depict my games in High Definition.

As stated before, i dont want to be picky with my graphics but i dont know the difference between HD and...better HD?,and i made sure i read the specs on this thing carefully and of course, it all checked out to me when i bought it...that is until i plugged it in and set it up and found out that it isnt as HD as my brother's, which i say again...WHAT THE HELL?!

and to Axcalay, i really didnt know that it needed to say Full HD on the specs before i bought it. i just assumed that if i was purchasing an HDTV, i would be...well, getting a full, genuine, perfect HDTV.

it did say that it was 720p on the TV before i bought it, and i thought, hmmm... if i remember correctly, most games are set in 720p. i dont know, maybe im really really stupid, but i coulda sworn that i heard somewhere that God of War 3 and maybe a couple of other games were the only games that could run at 1080p.

Either way, i set it to Automatic settings and it detects the resolution to be set at 1080p. i set it at manual and put it at 720p (like the specs were shown for it said that it was 720p) and it makes it fuzzier and jaggies galore (worse graphics).

So you all can prolly imagine my confusion and frustration is hitting the fan rite about now

thats why you dont buy a crappy tv. seriously...a sanyo? not all HDTVs are created equal. your tv has hd resolutions, but resolution is only one of several factors that give you awesome PQ. if you have a 1080p hdtv, but the tv has crappy black levels, bad color accuracy and saturation, you will have a crappy 1080p picture...get it? i think you should of saved up a little more and got something better. i've seen 42 inch sony/samsung/sharps/Lg for about 500-600.
