how to play avi files?

is it possible to paly avi files on the ps3? i want to try to becuase when i format to mp4 it wdoesnt look good in the big screen its all choppy and not clear.

Not on the XMB atm, but I've heard stories of people installing linux and then being able to play .avi files.
