Ok i have seen many many threads by new users/owners of the ps3 asking about how to care for there ps3 and thought maby we should have a thread on the subject. MOD's if you think its a good idea how about makeing this a sticky thread please. I'll start off by listing the things I know of and request any one else who can add ideas and recommenddations to the list to please do so. if this thread is made a sticky i will do my best to take all new info that others add and edit it into my first post as to make it more simple and easy for new users to learn. Also please excusse my spelling. if the thread is made offical i will do my best to fix any spelling errors ;)

----------------------------------------------

#1 the golden rule is this, always keep your ps3 in a well vented area that has good air flow. what this means is do NOT keep the ps3 in something like a inclosed entertainment center shelf. That does not mean the system can not be in any entertanment shelf. just make sure it has both an open front and rear. And at least 4 to 5 inchs of space on the sides. this well allow hot air to flow out of the back of the system and allow for freash/cool air to be pulled into the front. when you keep a system like the ps3 inclosed the heat will build up as it has no were else to go.Also never set the ps3 on carpet.not only will this cuase heat build up but will also cause more dust intake.

#2 make every attempt to keep the ps3 dust free. when the system is not in use and is powerd down i have found it best to cover the system with a towel or pillow case. but allways be sure the system is powered down. there is no need to wrap the system up in a towel ect just lay one over the top. of course this is not needed if you keep your system in a entertainment center shelf.

#3 When dust does build up around the vents its a good idea to clean them out. the best way to do so is to use a vacume cleaner suction hose attatchment or shop vac ect to suck out the dust. I highly recommend aginst useing compressed air. the resone is becuase it will scatter alot of the dust around in side the system, Wich may settle on things like the disk drives optics and heat syncs ect. Also compressed air has moisture wich while unlikely could still posably cuase a problem.

#4 never stick any thing inside the disk slot. You may think its a good idea to use a Qtip to clean around inside there but trust me you will end up doing more harm than good. useing a damp NOT WET Qtip or cloth ect on the out side of the disk slot to clean dust build up from the foam is fine though.

#5 when cleaning the out side of your ps3 use a micro fiber cloth or as saoft a cloth as you can find that is damp NOT WET to remove dust, smudges ect as the ps3 is very easy to scratch and cuase swirl marks. swirl markes are pretty much unavoidable but you can keep them to a min.

#5 when powering down the ps3 always use the controler. never turn the system off by way of the rear switch unless the system is in stand by mod first. it has been reported that doing so can cause hardwear failures.only use the rear power switch to shut off the system completly if you know your not going to be useing the system for a great length of time such as when you are going on vacation ect.also if there is a lightning storm be sure to power down your system then cut it completly off by way of the rear on/off switch before unpluging.

#6 If the system locks up most of the time it can be rebooted by holding down the on/off touch pad located under the disk slot for 5 to 10 secounds. the system willl take longer to power down when this happens and will normaly beep 3 or so times. This can happen randomly and does not mean your system is faulty. Unless of course it happens alot. if your ps3 locks up multible times dureing a gameing session with more than one game then chances are you do have a hardwear issue. other resones include a bad install of a game, a currupted save file or plainly a buggy game. one example is fallout 3. many users are exp crash's, freezes ect. if a game does freeze up often be sure to try another game to see if its just the one game or all your games.

#7 Always try to take a 30+ minute break after two or so hours of gameplay or movie playback, power down the system. not only is this good for your eyes ect but it allows the system to cool down.

#8 Its recommended to use a GOOD surge protecter. One with a built in battery back up is highly recommend.

more to come.....

It's most likely to get locked. Anyways, if want to know how to take goos care of your PS3 then why don't you just read the users manual.

I dont see the point of this thread all these things are commenly known especially the part where you urge people to take a break... Come on we all know this but there are very few people that actually take a pause after every 2 hours of gameplay.

So, is it better to turn the actual power switch in back off when in standby, or leave it on?

-Thanks

Placing a towel over the PS3 while not in use is excessive. How about dust your house every 2 weeks and make sure your AC filter is good.

I disagree with taking a 30 minute break every 2 hours of gaming, if you have it in a well ventilated place then what's going to break?

yea iv started useing those cloths as well. but only for dust. if the unit gets a smudge like say from oil off your hands then a damp micro fiber cloth works best.

in a perfect world then yes a thread like this would not be needed but the fact that pretty much every day some one makes a thread on this subject. i just felt it would be good to have a sticky containing as much info as posable. and not every thing i listed is coverd in the manual.

takeing a break every 2 or so hours is not a must but its advised.

not every one reads the manual or knows these things wich is why we keep getting threads by knew users asking these same qustions. and you never know when some one will come up with a good idea such as useing swiffer dusting cloths to remove dust.

Iv heard that its best to leave it in standby. as i said you should only use the power switch in the back if you know its going to be a long while before you use the system again, such as if you going on vacation or if there is a thunderstorm .

i doubt the mods will sticky this topic. but what i do is use an air compressor to blow out all the dust in the vents. i don't play for on my PS3 for more than an hour. But either way, even if you do baby your system. for those who have the 60GB, eventually you'll get the YLoD. I know i did. I couldn't believe it, i thought blowing the dust out once a month and limiting my system use. I thought it would last.... but i was wrong.

Wild_Card

I think thats good advice for people to rest their eyes (even though I would never do that) but you shouldn't have to cool down the PS3 as long as it is well ventilated and it's usually better for electronics not to be turned off and on all the time.

The rest of your advice is great though.

yea thats true. there is probably no real need hard wear wise but i just always felt it was a good idea. and realy its not for the cpu or gpu but for the moving parts like the blueray disk motors and HDD ect. even still heat kills electroincs more than just about any thing.

And like i said new ideas i would edit into my first post so as to make it easy for people to find and keep them from haveing to scower mulible pages of a long thread.i justfeel it could be very help full

just a quick note, its good to do the dusting like you describe in the first post, but if your going to be taking away dust, do it by something that sucks it out, not blows it in cause its very hard to blow the dust out of the PS3 when there is no space for the dust to blow out, due to the way the hardware is made and efficient space usage and design not allowing circulation except only through the fan, unlike the early PS2. The only way you can actually blow air into the PS3 and expect to get dust out is if you have opened the ps3 and even taken apart some of the components like the blue ray player off the mother board with the attached fan. I had my PS3 for 2 years and once opened, I was able to effectively dust it, and there was alot of dust btw and used an air compressor and it made a room the size of a living room dusty when it was blown out. I had used a vacuum cleaner on it to suck the dust out of the air vents but that only takes away the tiny dust particles on the vents, sorry to let you know, there is alot of dust you now know about. So the original note was, there is no point in using compressed air because that will only push the dust you have on the vents more in, helping the dust settle in faster. If you really want to clean out ur PS3, though I am not saying anyone should do this, disassemble it and then blow the dust out. This was done on a 60gb PS3.

oh, right the thing that bothered me was to tell you the dust from the PS3 wont help from getting dust in the Blu Ray drive because there is a metal case around the drive itself like if u have ever opened a PC and seen whats inside, there is no way for dust to get to blu ray drive let alone get inside or to the lens unless u blow dust through the front disk opening. Lol there is not much worry there, PC people should understand that better, I know this cause from my previous post I have opened up my PS3. People are think that everything can happen, IDK if u remember ur PS1 lens ever getting dust on it and now working and that thing was in the open when u opened the disk cover. lol Sony, and computers in general have worked out details like that a long time ago.

Dont stick the Qtip in very far. just use it to clean the foam or felt thats around the rim of the disk slot.

rgr. iv sence seen vids on youtube were people have taken the ps3 apart so its prob not a big deal about useing compressed air. and yea as long as your warrinty is up takeing the ps3 apart and cleaning it is the best way to do so. but only if you know just what your doing.

Well you want the ps3 to draw in as much cool air as posable and get rid of as much hot air with out traping the hot air around the system.def give the ps3 as much space as you can. this does not mean you need to have it in the center of your room roped off lol :p

Why would you do that? Allowing your system to heat up then quickly cooling it down every 2 hours will put quite a bit of stress on the components, and really won't help your system at all.....in fact it's quite the opposite.

I'm closing this because it's old... BUT...Wild_Card (or someone else), if you want to update it and make it easier to read and just make it prettier overall, we will consider putting it in the condensed stickied thread.
