Ok, it needs to stop. People need to restrain themselves. Just cause the internet puts everything at your fingertips doesn't mean you need to spend every (online) waking moment getting insane about a game(s).

Hype is killing people. The expectations. The instant response of a forum filled with rabid fans of a game that hasn't even been released yet. It always ends in the exact same way. The game comes out. The reviews are wishy washy (or even great), but half the people that were sweating bullets everytime they saw new gameplay footage are on the boards raging.

"It's just not like the original!"

"I'm so dissappointed"

"This game could have been great if they had changed x,y,z"

"They should have improved on the following things as it IS a sequel!"

or my personal favorite,

"The hype for this game just ruined it for me"

Wow, really? The hype you created for the game ruined the game for you? Maybe you should go out and get some sun, man. Really, it is just sad that this is the gaming community. I was psyched for LBP2 cause it was being released right next to my Bday. Boom, it gets delayed. Oh, well. I forgot about it and got another game (ironically an over hyped game that got mixed reviews from people that over hyped said game) for my Bday and loved it. If there is one thing I've learned over the years, it's to not expect anything from a game release. The less i care and the more I accept the game for what it is the happier I am with it.

To clarify, I am not giving game devs a free pass when they make crappy design flaws, I notice when something is broken too, I'm just saying, take a breath, go live your life and stop hyping yourself up over this.

Not really, MGS4 was hyped and it delivered. It's just game developers are trying to stray to far from their formula or they're not offering enough to innovate them self from other titles of the same genre. I personally haven't hyped a game that hasn't done well. I hyped Demon's soul it did well. I hyped Super Smash Bros. Brawl it did extremely well. I'm hyping Marvel Vs Capcom3 even though from what I've seen it screams 8-ish.

That's funny that you mention MGS4 actually. I was just on another thread and just about everyone on there trashed MGS4 and said it wasn't as good as they had hoped.

Guess that's subjectivity for ya. . .

imo mgs4 didn't suck because it was overhyped....it sucked because there were four cutscenes to every 5 minute gameplay sequence.

I enjoyed MGS 1,2, and 3, primarily for the gameplay though the story was interesting. Also love Peacewalker and MGS PO. But MGS4....it sucked.

Hype certainly isn't a great thing in the games industry, but you're telling people how to act. Hype occurs in movies and games, and it's not going to stop. The game industry releases trailors and announces things to build that hype. It's not all the gamer's fault.

1,000% agree with the TC

games like:

  • CoD
  • MoH
  • Fallout NV
  • Star Wars
  • MMA
  • GT5
  • AC: B

and I think i'm missing some, they all had a huge amount of hype, which forced the developers to rush the game to kill they hype once in for all.

PS. please stop responding the the TC with "Not really" or "Not necessarily", it really irritates me when I see people respond like this when they know the TC is right. its like they enjoy giving the TC the contrary without any real evidence.

I highly doubt hype is going to destroy the gaming industry. The game industry isn't based entirely around forums with a few dislike threads and a few games you know.

A certain games gets hyped and it doesn't do well. Wow move on theres plenty of other good games out there to play.

It irritates you if someone has a different opinion? You must be a very irritated person then. And what exactly makes the TC right? Honestly I read his paragraph and automatically equated him to a crazed wino babbling about the apocalypse on a street corner. His rant is targetless and is better suited for a blog because it offers no points of discussion. Just his view about something that's shockingly irrelevant. My guess is someone on this forum said something negative about a game he likes (god forbid), said something like "people overhyped this game" and it led to the aforementioned rant. To which I will say, I have no idea what you're talking about.

Who creates hype for a video game? The developers. That's how they sell their game. If there was no hype for a video game, it wouldn't make money because no one would be talking about it and piquing interest towards it. I assure you, no one is stupid enough to be "hyping themselves" up for a game. That implies that the player is not researching the game at hand a looking at the content the developers released to generate said hype. If the product fails to deliver what the content the developers released before the game was released, then people are going to complain. Especially if they are technical flaws. And if you're talking about a sequel to another a game, it's VERY realistic to expect the same degree of quality from a sequel that the original game had. Most of the people buying the game are buying it on the merit that it's following the original game. So if it isn't up to par with the original, why WOULDN'T people complain?

If you like the game, great. You shouldn't get worked up because a bunch of people online said something negative about a game you like.

maybe not the forums, but all the news, previews, and commercials ads from professional websites or even tv shows like G4/GS/IGN are all to produce hype which leads the devs to rush the game.

This thread is stupid. Expectations, hype, or whatever you want to call it have existed since the Mayflower sailed across the ocean expecting the spoils of discovering a new land. What did they get? A lot of dead people at the hands of cold weather, Indians, etc.

TC, how about this? DON'T pay attention to hype i.e. read previews, visit forums, watch advertisements. Otherwise I guess you will just always be dissapointed.

End of thread.

The reason i look at ratings for a game (or even care for that matter) is because it helps me shape an opinion about the game. It will always tell me the Pros and Cons for the particular game and help me decide whether or not to shell out the money for it.

I must admit tho when i'm waiting a long time for a game (and hype does build up for it) and the reviews are below average it does upset me a little. But i will not cry over it or bash someone about it

I don't know about destroying the industry, but people really need to learn how to manage their hype. Nothing wrong with looking forward to a game, but when you put it on a pedestal it could never possibly achieve, your only doing yourself a disservice. And the "X game was overhyped" cry threads do get rather annoying. And for the love of anything and everything, stop worshiping numbers. I don't know where this systems war mentality came from that every game has to get a 9 or it doesn't count. But in the end, its just a number, your experience can not be controlled by a number.

Exactly Sepe. I should have put community rather than industry apparently it's an anal night. . . .

Banana, first off I am not responding to any particular game so nice try. It isn't a personal issue beyond the fact that almost any forum I go to (not just on this site) has a following of gamers that spend all their time posting on a game that has yet to be released. I'm not saying that's the bad part, that's fine, it's when it's practically obsessive. And the inevitable, "Man, this game didn't live up to the hype" BS that follows the game's release.

example: Dues Ex forum, the usual comments about how good the predecessor was (Dues Ex1 not Invisible Wars) and of course you already have people who post on the board saying, "gee I'm worried this game isn't gonna live up to the hype after watching that last video of gameplay". . . jesus, come on!

And really, hype has been around since the Mayflower? Wtf? Did we just have a Plymouth Rock project in Middle School??

It's very simple to understand. There is no reason for you to care what someone you don't know thinks about a game that you like. Any game that generates a good deal of hype generates money regardless of any negative feedback it's receiving. That's all that game developers care about and that's all that you as the fan can want for the developers.

I'll give you that Banana, I shouldn't care what other people think about a game. Hell, we all shouldn't care. We shouldn't care about what the score for the game was either. That being said, when I go to a forum to discuss a few things about a game I'm interested in and the board is full of screaming about how hyped the game is it irritates me(GT5 anyone?). Is it logical to just stop going to forums? i don't know, I can get a lot of useful info from fellow gamers that are figuring things out too, so it's a loss of a great resource.

Oh well, it doesn't matter. Not sure why you even posted seeing as I am a crazy apocolypse street corner wino, lol.
