Too bad you can't just try The Force!!! Seriously, I'm sorry for your loss. Seems to me that YLOD is more common on the 60gig models... is this correct?

I basically had my PS3 on a shrine with 2 feet of breathing room on every side, i either vacuumed or blew it out with compressed air every couple weeks... it took out the HDD and tried just turing the console on, but no dice, still YLOD (which means it might not be HDD failure... I might try to hook up my 60gig HDD to my PC and back it up on there... and then format it...

Did you try taking out your HDD and putting it in again?

That's what people say is the cause of YLOD. It's a HDD misread/failure.

yes... i did that twice, tried booting without the HDD.. tried running the fan trick... This sucks... i don't want to send it in and get a crappy 80 gig back :( the main reason i paid so much for a PS3 to begin with is so my library of PS2 games would work :(

If you've got Hillelslovak on your friends list, you should ask him.

I think he's in Canada too, and he had his PS3 fail a while back.

Wait, I think I read somewhere that Sony has a bunch of stocked 60GB PS3s in cases where they need to replace broken ones of the same model. Don't quote me on it, but it's not absolutely hopeless in getting back a 60 GB, or at least getting back a backwards compatible one. But damn, good luck buddy :( You're one of the last people on here to deserve this kind of divine retribution.

I think they may be able to fix it and send it back to you or possibly a refurbished 60 gig. If you go through sony I would be very specific about wanting the same console back. They can do it if they want to. Sorry for your bad luck. Hopefully your saga will have a happy ending. I have a 60 gig also and I always have that fear in the back of my mind that this will happen to me too.

When nearly anonymous newbies talk about the YLOD or their PS3's failing it's easy to kind of write it off... But for this to happen to a forum regular kind of makes it hit home a little harder... Actually quite a bit harder. I'm suddenly worried for the health of my PS3. I never really figured it would last as long as my PS2 did (still going strong after nearly 8 years, btw) but when they start crapping out after about 2 years you start to worry. Needless to say if mine crashes Sony will be getting a polite yet insistent reminder that I've been a faithful and loyal customer for 10 years and that I believe it poor business practice to charge a full $150 for replacement so relatively soon in the system's life cycle. Maybe we would have been better off as consumers if the PS3 was originally really buggy. Then maybe Sony could have responded with a 3 year warranty a la Microsoft. Or maybe not. My condolences, hellyeah. Were you able to back things up by slotting the HD into your computer, by any chance?

I posted the same thing about 2 weeks ago. I was so pissed.

I had a 60 gig for 3 years and 1 month.

You got to call Sony, they will send you an email to fill out

then you got to play 150-165 american dollars so they can send you a box

Wait a week for the box from ups, pack up the box, fill out a paper, drop it off at a ups store and just wait.

I sent mine back yesterday with a game inside.

First console I ever had go out on me.

Sucks right

I didn't tell them I had game stuck in there over the phone, but on the paper that comes with the box , there is a question that asks if there is any software stuck inside the system and to write down its name.

Um yea you're wrong. You contact sony and you do it on teh computer and then you pay $161 US dollars and they send you a pre-paid box to ship it in. It takes about a total of a week and a half to get your box then ship it off and get it back. They only had mine for 2 days once they received it.

so you basically have no idea what the YLOD is then? the console won't turn on.. how am i supposed to back everything up? i don't care about syncing trophies.. the only ones i'll have to do over are the 4 Skate 2 ones I got before it died...

Damn that stinks I'm sorry to hear that and i'm a little more worried now. I also have a 60gig and just started to play SKATE2. I hope my days are not number but hearing things like this from reputable sources make me get that sinking feeling. I just recently moved into a apartment and funds are really tight so if mine crapped out my last source on entertainment would be lost. I hope everything works out for you and I hope to see you online soon maybe play a few games of skate.

I hope everything works out for you and I hope to see you online soon maybe play a few games of skate.2beers_in_hand
Well at least i'm smart enough not to jump on the forums saying "SKATE 2 KILLS PS3'S!!! ZOMG!" like alot of people did... Idk how long it will be for Sony to send me a box, fix it, and send it back (hoping they can fix it, i don't want a crappy 80 gig or i'm gonna have to buy another PS2  )

[QUOTE="americahellyeah"][QUOTE="hazelnutman"]Wait, I think I read somewhere that Sony has a bunch of stocked 60GB PS3s in cases where they need to replace broken ones of the same model. Don't quote me on it, but it's not absolutely hopeless in getting back a 60 GB, or at least getting back a backwards compatible one. But damn, good luck buddy :( You're one of the last people on here to deserve this kind of divine retribution.CanadianCR

I've heard that as well.. i really hope its true... i payed 1000 dollars for my PS3 at launch... mainly because i wanted the backwards compatibility... luckily i still have a semi-working chunky PS2 and a dozen AAA RPGs i haven't started on PS2 (i really hope they work...) With all the 60 gigs seemingly dying out i'm starting to think that it was sony's complete fault.. like the firmware they'd been releasing somehow didn't work well with the 90nm chips in the older console so it was too taxing on them or something... I'm gonna call them tomorrow (i found the number) and get a coffin... (err.. box) sent out... Hopefully my brand new copy of skate 2 can still be saved... Thanks to all for your condolences... :| I almost did.. my life has been really crappy lately... this was like the last straw... i literally have nothing to look forward to... the job i've been waiting for since September is probably delayed another couple months... i've been turned down from every job i applied for (like a dozen or so, not even good jobs.. like overnight stocking crap) My health is kinda going down hill lately... and its -40C out... PS3 was the only thing I had enjoyment in... and now its dead...

no worries about the copy of skate, i guarantee youll get that back, on youtube they show the one thing, where the fans go on blast by holding down the power button amongst some other steps i cant remember, but thats supposed to get the disc out, if that doesn't work im sure sony's technical assiastance can get it out with out a problem, and just ask about being able to transfer your hdd to another console or just take it out and put it into your new one you get, thats sucks i wanted to play skate with you, i sent you a message over psn and everything lol, but best of wishes my brotha

LOL true. Ive had a couple of friends send back their PS3's and it took about a week to get a new one. If you ship it lets say on a Monday you should get a new by one by Friday you also get a tracking number so you can see where its at at all times.

Really sorry to hear that dude. I've had my 60gb since launch, paid about the same price as you, and am now scared as hell. I'm even more scared since I'm in Japan and can only imagine the nightmare of trying to get it fixed. Again, sorry about the system, and I REALLY hope you get a 60gb back. Good luck...
