I finally got the YLOD i was using my PS3 the other day watching a blu ray movie Matrix Reloaded about 5minutes into watching the system locked up beeped and shutdown. I let the unit sit for 5minutes turn it back on it booted for 1minute and shutdown.

I left it for 1 hour came back and tried it went straight for red to yellow and then back to red but it just keeps flashing red. If you press the button one more time it will sit on a red light. But if you try and turn it on it goes straight back to yellow then a flashing red!!!!!

I have a launch 60GB. I couldnt believe this YLOD !!!!!

I called Sony customer care.

At first I played dumb just to see what they would say.

I said I was using my ps3 while watching a blu ray movie then the system froze when I tried to turn it on the light flashed red then yellow

The lady said it sounds like a system problem a heating issue and if its not in warranty it will cost $280 to repair.

I informed her that I had actually researched the issue online and it seemed to be a wide spread issue with the playstation 3 that it would seem would be a manufacturing issue that Sony is yet to address.

She said well on the internet its just customer speculation.

I said speculation? There is videos all over utube of the fault that I am having.

I said that's fine perhaps department of fair trading may be interested in this because it seems to be a wide spread issue. One which Microsoft not long ago was found out to have and they were forced to extended customers warranty to a 3 year period.

She then went and got the manager.

Long story short they are covering my ps3 under warranty as long as I have the receipt !!! WWWOOOOOTTTT

to borrow a term from my CS days...

the lady got owned.

Well played hand my friend. I have a 60 gb myself, not a launch though. I got it around a year after launch from COSTCO. If anything goes wrong they usually take stuff back no questions asked. I will first follow your lead though because I don't want to lose all my game data!

Once again, well played !!

YLOD is pretty uncommon so chances are you most likely won't get it.

Also just to add i actually have 2 PS3's they are both 60GB aswell. I pulled the one with YLOD open and there was a fair bit of dust inside. So i decided to do the same with the other since both technically out of warranty.

The one that is still running didnt have as much dust in it. I swapped the Hard Disk Drives around with the one getting YLOD to see if that was the problem but it still wouldnt boot.

I then tested the HDD on my computer and all the files are there so its not the HDD causing the fault.

I then took the power supply out of the working PS3 and put it in the one with YLOD and it still wouldnt boot.

So as a fairly good guess i would say that there is a burn out on the Motherboard or the GPU.

The unit was in a very well vented spot so i am really starting to think this may be a known issue with sony that is why they stopped making backwards compatablity perhaps and if you bring up 60GB on the phone the rep when i asked her how common and how many calls she would recieve about this seemed slightly nervous and said she couldnt comment

I also asked Sony if they would delete everything from the HDD and they said they wipe everyones Hard disk that comes in as procedure due to illegal content that could be on the drive so they do it just to wash there hands of the problem.

So if you do need to send your PS3 in if you can back up your HDD make sure you do !!

I got the YLOD last week. The same day i got killzone 2. So i havent been able to play it yet, which sucks. But i sent it in right away and am going to get it back on Thursday. The fixing process is pretty quick so thats good. My ps3 is 60GB. Thats my luck :)
