I have a 80G Model, and is says my remaining space is 64/74gb...74????

Lol I downloaded a few demos and I have a bunch of save files and a few trailers here and there, so I have 64 gigs left on the PS3...but...how come it say 64 gigs remaining out of 74? I thought 80gb models come with...well you know, 80 gigs.

Another thing...I deleted a bunch of demos and videos...but I dont understand how I could have already burnt 16 gigs. The only games I've played on my PS3 are Motorstorm, Assassin's Creed, MGS2, God of War. I hardly doubt those game saves plus 1 uncharted demo and an ironman trailer can eat 16 gigs...where is my space going? and why did i only start with 74 gigs.

Some of the gigs were used to support the Console itself.

the ps3's OS uses 6 gigs itself. I think your game data for some of your ps3 games could be large. Dont fret. You wont run out anytime soon.

As for only have 74GB, it is because space you don't technically have because of the whole base 10 vs base 2 thing.

When you buy a harddrive, you are buying it with the number represented in base 10. But when a computer sees the harddrive, it calculates the number in base 2.

Example, a 80GB harddrive in base 10 is 80x10^9 which is 80,000,000,000.

Now lets look at what 80GB is in base 2, 80x2^30 which is 85,899,346,920.

Now 80,000,000,000 does not equal 85,899,346,920.

Now lets look at what 74GB is in base 2, 74x2^30 which is 79,456,894,976.

Now 79,456,894,976 is a lot closer to 80,000,000,000. Now we just need the missing 543,105,024 which is a little under 518MB.

So in base 10, your harddrive is 80GB, but in base 2, your harddrive is about 74.5GB. And since computers work only in base 2, this is the number you see.

settings, OS and other essential things that make the system function take up those 6 gigs

Reviving this topic. I have only 45gb left and all my game data including saves only comes to around 8 mb so far!

Downloading game data to Ps3 takes a lot I've just found. Mgs4 puts 4gb on HDD itself. Depends on the game. Games of a larger size, as it utilises Blu ray discs, and to work effectively I think they need to download some to the HDD.
