Not sure I understand what you are asking. Do you have the new drive in the PS3? If so, then yes, it will need to be formatted by the PS3

It's just like back in the day when you popped in new floppy disc into a computer; you had to format it for the computer.

Yes, it needs a 2.5 INCH hard drive (notebook drive). Did you buy a normal sized hard drive or a notebook drive. Regular sized drives don't fit in the PS3.

The PS3 does the formatting for you.

i doesnt even go on the main menus first it says to connect my controller to the USB then it says

The PS system cannot be run properly

IF the system cannot be restarted the system partition of the hardisk must be reformatted and you must reinstall the system software.

Insert the storage media that contains update data of version 2.5 or later and then press the start and select buttons at the same time.

For more information on how to obtain update data. refer to the SCE website for your region.

so what do you guys think i should do please help me out

sounds like the drive might not have made a connection. When you put it in there you need to slide it into place for it to connect. take the drive bay back out and make for certain the drive is connected properly.

I upgraded my HD last week and got the same message. I think it means you need FIRMWARE version 2.5 so what I did was I downloaded that onto a flash drive via my PC and then inserted it into the PS3 and then went ahead with the formatting and had no problems at all after that.

The official Sony PlayStation website, nowhere else unless you want a bricked console.

LINK

Just make sure you create a folder named PS3 and then another folder within that named UPDATE and save the file there. The website does a pretty good job of illustrating it.
