I've been wanting a PS3 for some time now but haven't been able to afford it. In april we were thinking of buying a new computer for just using the internet. Can you go to any site and do anything you normally would on a pc on the PS3?

If you're going to be buying a pc just for access to the net, then you may as well get a ps3. You can still access the internet (although the only site I can't seem to access is hotmail, but if you've got a different email account you should be fine), and if you want to play games, you'll have to get a top end (expensive) gaming pc to play the sort of games that you can play on a ps3. It's up to you at the end of the day, but I'd recommend a ps3.

if you do social sites like facebook, you will find the ps3 has limitations. and let's not get started with online banking and a host of other draw backs. casual surfing, email, it's ok. but like the guy who posted a reply first said, a gaming rig is gonna cost you. you may be better off buying the ps3 for gaming and a low end pc for web activities. the cost of the two combined would come up less than a gaming rig.

I'll agree with that. Even a PS3 and Blackberry phone would be cheaper than a top end pc, and you can still surf the net pretty well on a blackberry!

Hell, you don't even need a top end PC to use the net. If net surfing is all you need it for, you could even use a Pentium 3 computer with a GForce 3 video card and 256Megs of RAM. The only difference is, you can update that. That would set you back maybe $150 for a tower like that.

PS3 has a lot of limitations with net surfing. A lot of web apps don't run (properly or at all) and it cannot be updated like a PC Web browser could. You'll have to wait till Sony decides to update it (when ever that may be).

If you want strictly net surfing, go with a cheap (by today's standards) PC and save a couple hundred bucks. A PS3 would be for games and other types of media.

To be honest I do not like using the PS3 for surfing the net, some websites do not run properly or sometimes just flat out run like crap, the picture can be very bad as well and very hard to read, hopefully you have a 1080p HDTV. I understand the move if money is tight, but it's not going to be the greatest web browsing experience for sure. I would try to figure something else out for web browsing.

no? ps3 80gig $400. base line pc $400(includes 19" lcd) total $800... average price gaming rig is $1,500 ...(though i've seen them as low as $1,200), either way, still over $1,000...

Definitely get a PS3 instead of a PC. Just buy yourself a cordless keyboard and mouse and you are all set. If you want your PS3 to be more like your PC then just go to http://psubuntu.com/ This will let you install Ubuntu Linux on your PS3, it is completely safe and works great! It's also FREE!
