I never played a Persona game before. Should I get Persona 3P?

Yeah, just found out about this game being now on the PSP and don't really know what the big deal about all the enhanced features of this port, since I never played the original P3, P4, or any Persona for that matter.

Let's see...I don't like Final Fantasy-type battle systems much, except for FFX-2 which was refreshingly different. Chrono Cross and the Tales Games are more up my alley for battle gameplay. What also interested me was the not so typical setting of the Persona 3 game compared to the other RPGs I've played.

As someone who's never played a persona game before, I'm really enjoying it. I'm playing it right now actually.

But the battles are turn based if that bothers you. The focus on elemental weaknesses, team attacks, and the ability to change your MC's persona mid battle might make it more interesting for you, though. *shrugs*

It's a standalone game, so you won't need any experience with previous games. (there's just a few nods to the past games here and there)

Ideally, I'd recommend getting Persona 3:FES on PS2 instead, since it has a much better presentation and an additional story mode. The PSP version is great for a handheld RPG though and has one or two extras that weren't on the PS2 versions.

I disagree.

Navigating the menus is like a chore in FES.

Strange...

X-2's battle system was not much different from Final Fantasy V, VI and IX. It's also somewhat similar to VII and VIII. You know, the "Active Time Battle" stuff.

I've never played any other Persona game; P3P is a nice game though. I'm playing it right now. It's quite a lot of fun.

I was referring more to the fact that the cutscenes were canned, and the running around school and town was completely removed in favour of the simple point and select system in the PSP version. It takes a large chunk of life out of the game, IMO.

You don't need to play the previous games (though there are little mentions).

And I think you should get it, it's really addicting.

I've beaten the PS2 FES version before and I still can't put this down, that's how awesome it is.

If you dislike turn-based combat you might not enjoy that part of the game. It is a pretty fun battle system though (I'm a fan of turn-based, but this is particularly cool as you can chain attacks and get bonuses from mini-games after battle etc). I'm even enjoying the point-and-clickness of the interface, although having watched some of the Giant Bomb Endurance Run of Persona 4, it's a shame some of the comedic animations aren't there (dunno if that was just new for P4, or cut out for the PSP game). It's the perfect sort of game for the system though, and it's the best RPG I've played since The World Ends With You, and to be honest, by the end I think I'm gonna have enjoyed this more.

Personally I just imported this from America as I suspect it won't be released in the UK (have to hope the 3DS is not region locked as I'm guessing whatever Persona game comes out on that won't be coming to Europe). It's my first Persona game and I'm absolutely loving it so far. 7 hours in and it's keeping me away from games like Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Street Fighter 4. Would definitely recommend it and I'm looking forward to any new games that might come out on PS3 or 3DS (assuming the 3DS isn't region locked).
