I never played any MGS games, will I be lost in MGS4?

Yes, although MGS4 is a game of it's own. It's would be good to play the first MGS, or at least MGS3.

there was a mgs series recap on the three major games (mgs,2,3) somewhere... check youtube or somethin along those lines. i also had never played any mgs game and only watched the recap and was fine in the plot. i dont see where all this convoluted story line talk comes from, seemed easy enough to me i think most of these gamers just have gotten used to simplistic kill kill kill -new level- kill kill kill -new level- kill kill kill that a lot of the shooter games have these days.

You can play all the MGS' and probably still be in the same boat. The story in MGS is complex to say the least. If you need help download that database thing on PSN it gives you a timeline and a family tree thing.

I have never played any of the other MGS games (not including MG for NES). I am having a blast playing MGS4, but I am sure it would have been a bit better if I truly understood all aspects of the story. Download and study the MGS database as it has ALL of the answers and will help you make sense of the immense story that is Metal Gear.

There is no way in **** you can get through the game and figure out what just happened. It's just not possible and would be missing a SHOOT! load of information all through out the MGS series, going back from 1,2 and 3. I would Highly recommend starting from the first MGS in order to get the full grasp. Every game sets up just about every event that happens in the next MGS sequel. If you play MGS4 with out playing the others, your not going to feel for Snake like you would if you played from scratch..

You won't be lost, but you wouldn't completely understand or appreciate the references of the past that lead up to the events of MGS4. Though you can catch on, but many people say the experience is better if you've played the other games and known the story first hand, prior to playing MGS4. I suggest the same, but it's really up to you.

lol, I have played the other games and I was still lost on occassion. The story is extremely convoluted, but overall they do a good job of refreshing your memory as to what characters fit in where... they have that MGS Database on the PSN that outlines the history of the MGS universe if you get too lost.

Don't let not playing the first three stop you from experiencing this game... it was really, really good.

If you don't get some kind of background info on the storyline you'll definately be lost for MGS4's story. So you should definately at least read the PSN summary or something before playing MGS4.

That being said, the emotional impact/enjoyment of the game is much stronger if you've played through the other games. When certain things happen(I won't spoil it of course) you just go, "WOW." Definately not the same attachment if you've only just read about the previous games.

How can people play a game, hell ANY game for that matter and brainlessly skip through all segments of story? i mean its your first playthrough :-/

Chapter 4 without backstory and cutscenes would be uber lame lol, walk around in deserted base, kill some immortal dude followed by fighting with a old geezer in a giant mech. i dont know how anyone can enjoy such random events without anystory

In my opinion, yes, purely because you'll be sitting through a cinematic cut scene saying "Who's eva? Who's Ocelot? and Who the hell is Solid Snake?"

A lot of the story is Explained through the database and the storylines itself but personally I'd recommend going to gametrailers.com and watching some of the MGS re-cap videos, it will give you a better grasp on the series.

I've played all the Metal Gear Games all the way back to the NES. You might be lost when you first start the games. You have a couple of options: Pay attention to all the details in the story as you play MGS4, download the MGS database, or play all the games to get caught up on the story. You should be alright, although MGS is a game genre on it's own.

You will love the gamplay, you wil enjoy the story and will like the characters whilst you may get confused with most of the game story-wise. Just buy the MGS Essentials collection which includes MGS1,2,3. Saying this I still recommend MGS4 because its a fantastic game

Sunny (the character) was introduced in MGS4. "Olga's child" was known since MGS2 technically. But it never mentioned if it was a boy or girl and there was no name.

Imo that leaves too big of a gap, the only way players can know how sunny was freed and eventually placed into otacons custody is by searching the database.
I feel another prequal coming, possibly for the PSP.

yeah, it really helps to have played the previous games, not just because of the story, but because of the subtleties.

YOu shouldn't, but if I were you I would at least do some research and read up on the game. YOu may encounter problem the ithe game-play of the game, it is about STEALTH, and if you are really good you don't have to kill any enemies in MGS4 too. YOu can try and shoot your way through but it is a headache. Use the quiet, tactical approach. 8)
