...is not "as" backwards compatible as the original 60GB version. I don't see how, but is their ANY truth in this whatsoever? I know that the newest 40GB version has no backwards compatibility, but I don't understand how it could affect the 80GB version?

If i remember correctly, the 60GB uses the Emotion Engine and the 80GB uses software emulation. Correct me if im wrong people. I got the 40GB. :P But either way, it should be fine.

its true.

the 20GB and 60GB systems use the same chips that the ps2 had for full backwards compatibility.

the 80GB system uses software based emulation for 90% backwards compatibility.

I'm pretty sure the both the 80 and 60 gig PS3's are even. I think they support about 95% of PS2 games. Don' trust me on that number

Incorrect, the 80gb has about 70% b/cand the 60 gb has around 90% b/c including the 20gb and the 40gb has zero b/c.

I think you're wrong but I'm too lazy to prove it so I ask you to prove yourself. Why wouldn't the 60GB be 100% BC when it basically has a PS2 inside? And I've heard that even when software emulation was first introduced (in Europe back in March) it was already 80% and has been growing.

the ps3 60 gig upscales games and the 80 gig doesnt because it emulates it.

something like that. either way, whichever you get you wont no the difference now will you?

I don't have a link anywhere to help prove him right, but I thought I remember Sony saying that even though they had the EE chips, there could still be glitches because its still using other PS3 components. One example I had was when playing God of War 1 on my 60gb PS3 the textures of the stone in the big rotating circular puzzle in Pandora's Temple would glitch up and get weird lines on them from time to time. I don't think it was a case where the EE chips wouldn't play games just that they could have glitches in a very few cases, hence why they said it wasn't 100% backwards complatible but pretty close.

And on the topic of BC, I remember the PS2 having issues with a couple of PS1 games so even it wasn't 100% (but close enough)

What are the differences between the 4 SKUs (versions)?

You can check backwards compatibility for specific games here

60GB - limited availability, price somewhere near $400-$500 (depends where you get it from and what comes with it like bundles or value packs), uses the EE chip - 99% backwards compatibility, built in Wi-Fi, 4 USB slots, SD, CF, and other flash card and memory slots/readers

80GB - $500 bundled w/ Motorstorm, uses software emulation (no EE chip)- 85% backwards compatibility (the latest figure I've heard - but its improving), built in Wi-Fi, 4 USB slots, has flash card and memory slots/readers (like 60GB)

40GB - $400, no PS2 backwards compatibility, I've heard that it still has PS1 compatibility though, built in Wi-Fi, 2 USB slots, no flash card and memory slots/readers

20GB - (I'm not sure if you can find this anymore),uses EE chip -99% backwards compatibility (like 60GB), 4 USB slots, no flash card and memory slots/readers, no Wi-Fi (you need an Ethernet cable to play online)

***NOTE*** All PS3s have PS1 backwards compatibility. The 40GB version is the only one without any form of PS2 backwards compatibility.

cool, sounds good. I was unaware that there was such a debate with backwards compatibility!
