I love my PS3. It has a bunch of great games: Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, Killzone 2, MGS4... all of which I can no longer play.

After downloading firmware 3.10 with that stupid Facebbok application, my Bluray drive can read discs no more.

Sony expects me to pay them $150 to repair my PS3.

I absolutely refuse to pay them for breaking my PS3; they should be paying me! You're a crook, Sony!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm FURIOUS.

Why do they expect you to pay for something that they broke? I don't understand.

I'm basically saying why haven't they been sued yet??

This has happened to a lot of PS3 owners!

In order to play it again, you have to send it in to Sony and pay them $150!!

Ridiculous!

Get some new games or pay the money. Whining about it isn't going to fix the PS3, raise the money, or avert your attention to different games.

You may be able to buy a drive from a 3rd party source. Just make sure it has a return policy in case it doesn't work.

Sorry, but I highly doubt it has anything to do with their firmware specifically. Perhaps some kind of hitch when you were downloading/installing the files caused it to go badly.

How do updates break PS3s? I have 4 different models and download every update and the systems work absolutely fine all the time. Maybe your internet didn't work properly while it was downloading? Like disconnecting and reconnecting while it was downloading and it fouled it up. Because PS3s are made to take updates not reject them and break the system.

It is entirely possible your Blu Ray drive died on it's own and coincidentally it occurred when you updated your console. I had a hard drive and video card both go bad at the same time as I was flashing my BIOS on my PC. I thought I had ruined my motherboard, but it turned out I had both a faulty HDD and video card... It happens.

Thats why its important to get the warranty, my PS3 stopped reading discs a while back, all i had to do was take it to best buy, show them my warranty receipt, and i got a new one onthe spot.

Restore it to factory default in the "system" section, and see if once the firmware is removed it the BD drive works again. Make sure you backup all of your files first. Then try to reinstall the latest firmware... I'm not sure if it will work but it sounds to me like it's worth a shot right?

I've gotten my PS2 fixed for free by arguing with the guy on the phone. It's really not all that difficult. Just say you followed the manual to the letter and that it wasn't your fault and they should do it for free.

This belongs in your BLOG. You're not even creating conversation. Besides, no firmware update could ever effect your disc drive. Your PS3 died, and it just so happens it was around the same time as the update.

Mate.. just being up that Act which says something about a item you buy must do it's job for some amount of time or something. If you say that, they just give it to you for free, because a blu-ray disc that stops working is a main use of the item. Trust me, I know LOADS of people that have done this. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the act so you'll have to do some research. Anyway, Firmware didn't do that to your drive. It's just knackered after use and managed to break as you downloaded.

There's always 1.. or in this case 10. Just because 999 people have a problem, but 1 person doesn't Does Not mean it doesn't it exist, it just means the probablity for the average person is less than 1%, not 0. In this case with technology, it's hard to discern the exact problem unless someone spent time researching and discovering the problem. Sony has and stated FW is not the issue *cough Yeak ok wink wink*. In my case, I was playing Heavenly Sword for a frew hours, but after it kept freezing I decided to update to 3.00 and low and behold it stop reading discs. Now I will not say the firmware directly destroyed my PS3, but I am positive it played a role in the process. Coincidence? Don't make me laugh..

Me personally, I'm waiting it out with my PS2 hoping something changes down the road. In a year or so, I'll probably pay the repair fees or just purchase a new slim. ps the Sale and Goods Act only applies to the UK, so us US folks are sol

PLEASE enlighten me then. How is it possible for a firmware, or software update, to effect in any way a piece of hardware and how it internally operates. Software works with hardware yes, but there is no way that he downloaded the firmware update, a little bug got into the blu ray drive and destroyed a physical component. (probabaly being the laser in this case) it just doesnt happen. And until you can justify how that works, I'm not taking anyones side. I am just being logical.

Pay 150 to get my ps3 fixed... if that happened to me I'd sell all my ps3 games and put more money into my pc and get a PS3 like three years later when they are dirt cheap or something. I like my ps3, great console. But a majority of my games are multiplatforms, that I could just buy on PC save for the exception of MGS4 and... yeah that's the only console exclusive I actually care for, the other being God of War III. But hopefuly that won't happen to me. I'd still like to keep playing PS3 games.
