Yesterday I decided to do something I've been meaning to do for quite some time, buy and play Fallout 3. I really like role-playing games in general, just recently I played and platinumed Deus Ex Human revolution, before that Mass Effect 2 also platinumed and The elder scrolls is one of my favourite game series. I have several hundred hours played on Oblivion... So it ought to be a perfect fit right? I can't for the life of me understand why I don't like it. Am I doing something wrong? I play it basically the same way I do Oblivion but I just find myself... not in to it. I can't really figure out how to do combat properly in it, the gun-play feels odd since theres no cover mechanic which I've gotten used to lately. It feels like you mostly just stand and trade blows with the enemies and use stim packs. I want to like this game and I can't imagine a game so loved as this not appealing to me so I must be playing it wrong. Does it pick up once you get a good 5-10 hours in, I'm only about 3 hours in to the game so far

are you using the VATS aiming system? if not, try it out
are you following the main story line? if not, follow it untill you reach a certain radio station.
have you gotten a companion yet?

and not everyone likes every good game. game's still good, you just don't like it.
like zelda, mario and final fantasy for me, i'm sure there good games, but I just don't like them.

I hated Oblivion while its my cousin's favorite game of all time. Just goes to show you that we all have different tastes. It's pretty much confirmed that I won't like Fallout either. To big and no direction imo.

Not everyone is going to like every game, all the praise in the world, doesn't mean anything to an individual opinion. Take GTA IV, I found so boring, it was a chore to finish for me and it is universally praised.

Thank you, its sad that people think a game being linear is a bad thing and a game being open is a good thing.

When I read all the issues Fallout 3 and New Vegas had on consoles I made a pledge to wait until I get my next PC to play them. I want to run these games at native1920 x 1200 resolution, at fluid frameras, and apply any and all mods that make the experience better. Sadly the only thing I have is the 1920 x 1200 monitor, I still have the same old laptop that would run the game just as bad (or worse) as my PS3. Of course I also broke down and bought New Vegas PS3 when Best Buy had it for the ridiculous price of $9.99. That was a bit of an impulse buy. I haven't opened it yet due to having other games to play, I don't know if I should just play it, or just keep waiting until I finally upgrade my PC (has to happen eventually, LOL, my laptop is on it's last legs).

I didn't like Fallout 3 and i got the Collectors Edition... I got to the part where you have to go to the radio tower and then stopped playing it due to not liking it what so ever. I gave it away bobblehead and everything.

It doesn't matter if you don't like a game you buy, you don't have to fall in love with all your games.

no cover system? so?

have you played an old school rpg before....there is no cover system either obviously... you just trade blows..

stim packs cost money(bottlecaps) or exploration to find... you have to think about stuff.

I too was rather bored, which is why I didn't even bother finishing it, which is a rarity for me (only other game I had no interest in finishing was GTA IV). I thought it would be able to suck me in like Oblivion did since it basically is set up like Oblivion with guns. However, I was just bored. The setting, atmosphere (with the exception of the museum towards the beginning), characters, and even the story were just really bland and lifeless; and not in the end of the world, nuclear fallout type lifeless.

I try to go back to the game, but can never play for more than an hour at most without getting bored. Oh well, just like anything else, it's not for everyone.

I have, I love rpgs in all forms... mostly, I think FF 13 is probably the single worst game I have ever played:P But I love old school rpgs and like I said Oblivion is one of my favourite games. I just thought that with the gun-play involved that it'd be a bit more fluent... I just can't get the hang of it, set it down to very easy just a few minutes ago and I still get myself and my dog killed every 10 minutes. Those mire lurkers just won't die even on very easy... I end up running out of ammo after like two of those bastards

And now my gotdamn dog died because he got stuck in one of 1000 bugs I've encountered in like 5 hours... This game is going straight back to my local gamestop in the morning:P Crap I really wanted something to occupy me after Deus Ex

I didn't get hugely into it at first ether. It probably took a good 10-12 hours before it really started to grab me. But it just might not be the game for it. If not then no biggie, but at least you gave it a chance.

I love Fallout 3 but I've always been conservative about recommending it. I know it's not a game for everyone. While Deus Ex and Mass Effect try to balance the RPG elements into a shooter, Fallout 3 is a hardcore RPG (like the original two) that has shooter elements. The gun play is clunky and one of it's short comings but thats what V.A.T.S. is for. I pretty much only used V.A.T.S. through the entire game. Well back to the point, if you don't like it, you simply don't like it.

I think I could get used to the gun-mechanics tbh. What does me in is the vast array of bugs and the inital diffculty, there's no scaling what so ever. After arriving at Megaton, selling and purchasing som crap, I set out to follow the QUEST markers. In other words quests I should have and do at this point in the game and run into some Mire lurkers or what ever they're called along the way... and they simply won't die, not even on very easy, I end up wasting all my ammo and my bat is pretty useless since I have little in unarmed. Same with following the lead on your father, you end up running into a big ass scorpion which is completely out of my league at this point in the game while follwoing a marked path for a story-line quest.

I agree Fallout 3 was super boring and I traded it in after I made it out of the underground place as it wasn't fun to play.

If you like challenging trophies that are also a lot of fun to get, then fallout 3 becomes a much better game, I don't feel games are given enough praise for the trophy/achievement choices, fallout 3 does a really good job of it.

Same here. Fallout 3 is one of my all time favorite games. I love the huge open world and the ability to do and go where I want. Can def see it not being for everyone though, can even be overwhelming at first. Just play the games you like and leave the rest alone.

It is kind of boring. I bought the game of the year version and got to almost the very ending and stopped playing. Just one of those games you play a little here and a little there. But certainly not something you just crush and enjoy. And I am being kind by not mentioning the glitch factor. Bethesda seems to love half assing their products.

It took a while before I started to enjoy it. Like 30 hours  You've got to use VATS of course. And you pick up lots of better weapons as you go through the game. It does start you out really poorly though - with a pathetically underpowered weapon and no idea where to go. After a while you get into it and start enjoying the atmosphere.

I found it boring too, It's one of those games where I realized I'm not into a specific theme, like Fallout 3 is the post-apocalyptic theme or setting. I probably played it for a good 6-10 hours before I realized its boring to me. :( I wanted to like it too.

Bethesda is making it up to us though with Skyrim :)

bored after a ew hours of play, VATS doesn't bring anything as the mobs aren't dead after a few shots and you have to finish them in FPS way, so if it wasn't there at all it'd be the same

i found the concept good but i just felt with all the bugs, which i incounted so many times, and i just couldn't find myself interested in any of the game, i just couldn't get into it, the problem is i went in knowing about the bugs and the graphics and the slow loads and all the rest i just felt cheated out of the game by the developers putting out a half hearted game, half the bugs are there each play through.

Maybe it's just not your cup of tea? I've put 150+ hours into it and I could still play for another 200. It's the second-best game of this gen for me, very very close behind Bioshock.

The post-apocalyptic style/feel was a neat idea, but it was filled with glitches and bugs that made my experience unplayable. I felt it was too barren outside of towns and tunnels.

I had 2 copies of Fallout 3, my first one which I got for PC around release in 2008. Then a second copy I bought for PS3 in 2010, platinumed in a month then sold it. I personally thought Fallout 3 was great. However, the game is worlds better on a PC, the console version is just meh.

But for sure, this game is not for everyone I've known lots of people who simply HATE it for various reasons. I for one loved it though. New Vegas rocks too.
