Just bought a HDMI cable to test 1080p for games and DVD upscaling, my understanding is DVD upscaling will not work on DVDs over component, unless the DVD has no Copyright Flag.

So your home made DVDs might upscale via Component.

Dont quote me on that though.

KILLERJAK edited his text, he made a mistake on his post and edited it, Blu-Ray works at 1080i via Component.

From my understanding and what i have read at 1080i your able to view blu-ray threw component cables but if you want 1080p you will need HDMI and in the future if they become strict it might require HDMI cause of there protection but no worries for you it will be like 2-3 years till that gos in effect and by then HDTVs with HDMI will be the standard and they will be supper cheap! so dont worry ^.^

HDMI is not required to watch in 1080p
there are a few TVs out there that do 1080p via component, not many but there are some
but if you only have 1080i then component is for you :D

Thats a Tricky question knowing DVI and HDMI are about the same im sure you can upscale DVDS but im not 100% sure so your gonna get HDMI to DVI im sure you can if you do get it try it out but someone correct me if im wrong.

you're right component can do 1080p but i think their talking about the whole HDCP issue, if you dont have HDCP you cant watch blu-ray movies over 1080p, it was mainly implemented to stop piracy.

DVDs only upscale with an HDMI connection (they can upscale all the way up to 1080p), they don't upscale at all with component.  Games can upscale to 1080p with component or HDMI.

dvd backups, dvd-+r will upscale via component, so do games, like Battlefield Modern Combat. For copyrighted material and DVDROM you need HDMI. It is an HDCP issue. My bought copy of LOFTR Two Towers plays in 480p via component. The backup of the movie upscales to 1080i, as well as my self encoded/authored dvd's of anime I made. In settings set the Blue Ray/DVD and the Game Upscaling option to Full Sceen. That's all you need to do. In a game that supports Progressive Scan, do not turn this option on in the In Game Settings of the software as it will override the PS3 hardware upscaler. Make sure your Video settings in the PS3 are checked off compared to what your tv can display.
