That would be GTA's downfall. The future?! HA! They're not stupid. Rockstar would not step into crap and bring it home.
Why not the future? they could make it Bladerunner like dark and gritty future with plenty fo new and intersted forms of crime and vehicles to steal. I'm tired of the retro thing it's really grating on my nerves. Last I heard GTA4 was going to be set in 70's London, frankly We've been there and done that and that's the last thing I want to do again.
future wouldn't be good unless it was set in about 2-3 years time so around 2009-2010 and things were more normal than hover cars. I think there should either be a 70's or 60's GTA or maybe a modern San Andreas with MP3 players and smaller mobile phones.
I live in england, and quite frankly I think it would suck if it was in london. That place is WAY too crowded, theres like nothing going on, and if it was set in 70's the cars would be cool at first, but lack of variety etc etc...

It won't be set in london, we have the Getaway for that and besides its too small for a GTA unless it was set across the entire south of the UK. I know what you mean about it being too crowded oh and there'd be the congestion charge to pay too.
I like the idea of a future-themed GTA. Perhaps some kind of Cyberpunk kind of thing. Rich and Poor, Violence, Pollution, Robots, AI, Corporations, Technology, etc.

Realistically speaking the new GTA would probably be present day or near future. They can riff on stuff like MP3 players and other techno gadgets made in the 90's since GTA3 didnt get the opportunity. Then the subsequent games can fill in the space between GTA3 and 4 like they did with the privious generation, but the problem is there really isnt much going on between now and when GTA3 was released aside from the war and there's only so much "dumb president" jokes you can mine out of that so they might need to embelish a little. That means pushing the game up to like 2010 and creating a little extra fiction then the later games can be more current untill they release GTA5.

Yeah and 3 stars for speeding through a speed camera but everythings fine if you're a dangerous criminal as you won't go to prison :P. This is actually sounding like a fun game... or not.
man you guys are sooo damn pessimistic. If Rockstar just kept with the winning formula (free roaming, radio stations, islands, swimminng, loads of weapons), but just changed the location it would still work. In fact it'd be awesome.
That's what we're doing. To say "just keep doing what they're doing" isnt very imaginative.
The thing about GTA is it's only as fun as the stuff they have to use as source material for events and jokes.
GTA3 and LCS used the early 90's GTA:VC and VCS used the 70's - early 80's GTA:SA used the late 80's
So it stands to reason that GTA4 would range from '00 - '10 but closer to '10 because then it's easier to wait for more rececnt events to create more things to play off of.

That's true but there's a limit to how often Rockstar can do that otherwise it could become repetitive.
I would like to see it set in the 70's but instead of a city or a couple of cities I want it to be global. Where you start out in a city then expand into nearby cities then maybe you go to south america to set up a deal to get "stuff" then you go to london to set up your orginization in europe and have missions on every continenent (except antartica). I think london, tokyo, new york, miami, chicago, detroit, madrid, syndney, and wherever else you can set up a crime syndicate would be awesome. It would be Blow meets Scarface meets James Bond but in the GTA fashion. just an idea.
What makes the gta games so fun is that we can relate to them. thats why the time is so important. the 80s the cars the dress the soundtrack GTA SA was the early 90s, so the new gta i would be surprised if it was the 70s it wont be the 50s or 60s cuz there making LA norire.

GTA: Old West style. They already have Gun and Red Dead Revolver.....but they need a real GTA type game set in the old west or even in the colonial days. Imagine that...jacking a stage coach or someone's horse. :lol:

... Okay I think you guys are going off on a crazy ass tangent right now. You;re forgetting a major point of GTA is the whole Grand Thefting of the Autos, Which you cant do if there are no cars. Yeah it's fun to run around and cause havok but there has to be an underlying theme keep the action making sense in a big picture.

BTW, the city in GTA4 should be called "Blade City" in homage to Blade Runner. ;)
plus Crackdown is a game where your a futuristc cop and the game is cell shaded. GTA would be way better because it would look more realistic and you would be a criminal and not a cop.
