It's okay... but Uncharted: Drake's fortune is a good game... besides, if you play it before U2... you won't have the "Should I or do i have to play U1..." inside your head...
You don't have to play U1 really understand the story of U2. However I highly recommend you atleast rent U1 as it will help you understand the story more.
U1 is worth it just because it's a great game plus there are a couple of jokes that are funnier if you've played through U1. One you won't get at all unless you've played through one.
There isn't much u1 that gives something to u2 but then again you should play it both are good games and the char have more depth if you play the first one. But if you play U2 and then U1 the story will not be as good... But that just me.
I don't think it's a factor at all, you'll be fine just playing the second one, but you should rent the first one just to see how everything started if you're curious.
You won't miss anything that could mess up the story, but just in case, play U1 if you wanna know some of Drake's background. And U1's story is awesome.
I've ALWAYS wanted to play Uncharted. But, way back when, buying a system for one game alone wasn't worth it to me. So I waited until there were more PS3 exclusives to merit me dropping 300 bucks on the system.
I don't regret buying the used copy of Uncharted 1. It's a great game and I'm playing through it a second time in order to find all the treasures and get all the other trophies I missed during the first walkthrough.
You'd miss the back story to Nate and Elena's relationship but that's about it.

you will also miss the backstory for sully and some nate's backstory
also you will not be feeling the satisfaction that everyone feel when they are playing a greatly improved sequel...one of the things I love the most about UC2 is how much improvements they made with it, a lot of things you couldn't do in the 1st one or that were completly flat and almost impossible to use (example "blind fire" and the grenades which were almost impossible to use in DF but got ultra improved in UC2)

I played the second and not the first. I still thought it was an amazing game. I guess if I had played the first it would have only made the second even more enjoyable if anything.
The only thing you'll be missing is the characters back grounds and how they know each other. Even after playing the first one you still might have some questions about their back grounds. Other then that you should be fine. I'd say go buy or rent the frist one and then get the second one.
not hardly any connection between them that is of any great importance but you can get uncharted for like $20 new at wal mart i think its definately a good game
