Because Dead Space getting the rating it did was rather unexpected by most people, and now that Gamespot has assured that it is an awesome game, it is under peoples radars... I see nothing wrong with that.

I only had to watch a few gameplay videos to tell this game was going to be great (atleast to me), the review didnt give anything new info about the game except how long it is and that GS liked it. People really need to make decision for themselves and not just let someone tell them what good games to buy.

Simple in my case Dead Space interested me but failed to convince me! Seeing it get high ratings is good since now I know for sure im not wasting my hard earned 60 euro's. It has nothing to do with not thinking but being wise to your wallet...

Ofcourse people will be more excited by an already established and flashy franchise like Fallout 3! Especially coming from bethesda!

Well, to be fair, I never heard of this game until a couple week ago. I found out that EA was developing it didnt want to buy it because of EA making crappy games. I didnt want it but after some reviews I think I might pick it up for Christmas.

While that's a good idea to keep yourself from wasting money, its has its downsides, as the game could have gotten a low score, despite being very entertaining, which then causes u to miss out on a great game (Ratchet and Clank comes to mind); or in another case (being the worst of the two), a game could score high, you then buy said game, at full price, only to find out that it doesn't appeal to u at all; (I had that problem with Oblivion)

I use IGN primarily. All the talk about them being biased I disregard because I listen to their podcasts, learn the way they think, and understand how and why they review certain games the way they do. I have no such connection to these new GS reviewers. But that's just me. But I never let them judge for me what game I want to buy and I've never had a game "sneak up" on me the way Deadspace seems to have on some GSpotters. I agree with the TC.

Yes, that is true.

But, I don't come here to see what the reviewrs think tbh, I come here to see the videos, see the pics, read about the gameplay or watch videos about it... and if the game convinces me, I buy it. I trust no review other than my own.

I really didn't know and was hard for me to set a standard for it.
Yes, people need to make their own decisions, and I think that's why most of us come to game websites - so we can research the games out there and tell which ones are good from the bad ones. Critics help sum those decisions up, I must say.
If we didn't have websites like these and had no knowledge whatsoever of games, and instead go with what we think is good.. We'd probably be buying Jimmy Neutron from the bargain bins without knowing a thing about its quality.

I agree with you to a certain extent I also visit GS more for pics previews vids and gameplay the thing is you can get so disappointed when buying certain games or sometimes ofcourse pleasantly surprised, so I do also value other people their opinion whether it be on the board from the staff or IGN Then I take all that info and form my own opinion. Some games get high ratings but the content doesnt interest me I dont purchase it... and I think it works like that for most people

Well, you've probided me with a fine example of what's wrong with people these days... they can't judge for themselves. So what if you buy Jimmy Neutron from the bargain bin?? if you pick that game is because it clearly caught your attention to the point of buying it.

If it's good, or not it was based on your desition, not anybody else's... now you can say that you wanna avoid a bad game and I totally understand.

But what if reviews liked the opposite genre of what you like?? or if the were biased against the game you're interested in?? or even so, if they were biased towards the game you're not interested at all??

See this was the case of Dead Space. Sure, you say you were looking after this game before it got scored (and I have no reasons to doubt that), but most people here NEVER mentioned this game before, like I said in the OP.

Man, Kojima is right... we need the Patriots to survive.

Disappointment is part of life.

And let me show you an example of this: what game was overly hyped and got the first 10 score here on GS??? GTAIV

What game disappointed TONS of people because they bought all that hype?? GTAIV.

I'm not saying it's a bad game, bbut it disappointed a lot of people and that's a fact. And why?? because all the hyp and the cherry on top, a 10 score.

Really, people are being silly now. Why do we all hype AA, AAA, or AAAA for every stinkin' game now if they don't mean a thing and is silly that people look at them to determine a game? People ARE making their own decisions. It's our choice to go on these sites to begin with. It's our choice to actually get off our butts and actually buy a particular game. Never will it be Gamespot knocking at our doors with a game and say "Here, play this game."
I don't look at just Gamespot's review... I look at EVERYONE's... I look at IGN, I look at Gametrailers, I look at other critics, and I look at what you people think of the game... If everyone is raving over a particular game saying it's awesome, I think I shall look into it.
If everyone say it's crap... Then I don't see the point in the risk of putting a dent in my wallet.

I can understand you wanting to know exactly how good a game is, since most people have a limited amount of money to spend on games, so a review may help in choosing which of the games your interested in first; But there are many unfortunate people who have a "WOW, gamespot gave this deadspace game a 9, now i have to buy it" kind of reaction to the review. And the way people, who haven't played or just don't like MGS4 (or any of the other popular/"good"), are ostracized, its like people use reviews to find that game that will get them in the "in" crowd. My point is games aren't universal, so even with review there is no sure way of knowing, aside from really playing it yourself, whether you will like it or not.

I was interested after I found out the developers were influenced by The Thing. That was a week or so back, so I can get away with it correct?

I try not to be influenced by the majority. Hell that's why I'm still getting SOCOM for the actual game, and not the headset. I do agree that people are becoming way to much like sheep :(. It's a sad day in gaming that shooters are the only games that get real attention.

Survival horror games are a dying breed, Dead Space looks to be an interesting spin on the whole genre with the whole Space aspect added in :P. If I get the chance I will definitely be picking this up tomorrow when supposedly SOCOM will be on the shelves :@.

Well tbh, I never paid much attention to this game until a while ago. But it wasn't because of the 9 score. I was watching an episode of invisible walls at gametrailers.com and they all said that they were loving the game. Now that isn't enough to make me buy the game but it was enough to get me interested.

You're probably not gonna believe me, but I haven't regretted a single game purchase I've done. Hell, there was a topic not many days ago saying if any of us had movie based games, and you know my answer?? A Bugs Life!! Everybody lol'd at this, but guess what?? I liked the damn game.

marcl18123

What is funny is the people who look only at a Gamespot review to define a game... I'm glad I look at what most people have to say about games, otherwise, I would have probably given Ratchet & Clank a pass...

Anyways, I'm not saying Dead Space never interested me. Like I said, I've enjoyed the videos I've seen already, and I can say I have owned Dead Space merchandise for months now and keep it on my wall... I just, wasn't too sure about it though.. I don't know, it was just a lot of confusion for me overall with how I would like it in the end. Luckily most people like it so now I'm sure I want to play it.

Sometimes I need to hear from others about a game to make my final decisions... Sometimes that's not the case. LittleBigPlanet appealed to me enough to KNOW I would want it, and didn't need the help of hearing what others had to say about it.
Dead Space was only different for me. This is why critics get paid to do what they do afterall. They don't just make these reviews expecting nobody to read them and not learn a thing about their particular subject.

Just remember: reviews are nothing but point of view. Pretty subjective to take'em wholeheartedly.

But hey! Kudos, you're standing up for your beliefs and I admire that.

Dead Space was only different for me. This is why critics get paid to do what they do afterall. They don't just make these reviews expecting nobody to read them and not learn a thing about their particular subject.

I know they are point of view. That's why I don't buy games prior to reading a good review without knowing crap about that game.
The game would also have to appeal to me... Otherwise I guess I would own games like Gears of War and Grand Theft Auto (Even having the needed hardware to play them) just for the sake of owning them when a reviewer says I should, right?

My point exactly... and that's going on with a lot of people here right now with this game. Didn't care at all, and they all want a copy now.

ONLY after Dead Space got a 9 score, people starts mentioning this game. I've seen topics about Dead Space the whole day as if people ALWAYS wanted to get that game.

Dead Space or LBP... 3 days ago this game didn't figured in any list from you guys, they all were Fallout 3, LBP, FarCry 2... no Dead Space at all.

Wow!! Just wow!

do you really wonder why? people have been score-whores since day 1. they thought it would bomb on gs, but it didnt, so now they talk about it. my approval of the matter notwithstanding, it's most likely the reason why the talks erupted (and i mean that in a more passive manner).

Well hey, it doesn't bother me. Whatever floats your boat I guess. If people want it under their radar due to the Gamespot review, I aint complaining.

i have always wanted this game more then LBP(never interested me) so when it comes out going to hit up Toysrus for dead space socom and whatever else. but on side note yeah reviews are just opinions, but opinions we can take just for some knowledge when going to buy the game so your not disappointed. Yeah you need to do your own research like i do when i hear about a game i like i will follow it reading reviews(opinions) trailers, pics. Just remember a lot of reviews are player based sometimes good sometimes bad, but it is a bases to get started.

Well even though reviews are made to sway gamers to or away from a game but before the GS 9.0 rating. So many people was pissing on this game. Others denounced it because it was from EA. I have been interested in this game but the day it became sold was at E3. The animations are just amazing in this game.

i know what you mean man, people can't decide what games to like and when it gets a good score people just jump right on the band wagon. I've been eyeballing this game since they started developing it, i think it was like 6 months ago. But whatever...

I know what games I'm gonna like. And back in the day Gamespot was really good at giving a game a score that I usually agreed with. Nowadays, I gotta do extra research to find out more about a game cause Gamespot can give dumb reasons or have poor word choices when reviewing a game.

I make up my mind about buying a game before a score is given most of the time. (LBP, Rock Band 2, White Knight Chronicles, Disgaea 3) But if I haven't read about a certain game and it gets high scores then I'll check it out and see if its worth buying. Some games I wound up getting due to high scores were Patapon, Rock Band, and Warhawk...all awesome.

I know personaly i havnt heard of deadspace before it came up on these forums (when it got the ign review).

There is so many games out there and games comming out there is no way to keep track of them all. The rewview score much like any other review (for movies and ect...) just puts the product on my radar so i can do my own research and decide.

That doesnt mean i dont follow any game developments, or that there is games out there that i will buy almost regardless of the review (unless reviews pretty much say the game is broken/unplayable with bugs like big rigs review). But there is games out there i will not buy regardless of the score - no way im gonna ever buy a baseball game, or a racing game even if they score 10's on every single site.

honestly i haven't been paying any attention to dead space at all. then i watched the video review and liked the gameplay i saw. i have no other horror games in my collection atm and something to hold me over till LBP would be nice.

Its not really the 9 that impress me as much, but its dark scary atmosphere which in survival horror games i enjoyed the most. I only played a little portion of the game due to a test on psychology today- about 5 mintues :P, but regardlessly looking at the gameplay videos on youtube i was definetly impressed from what ive seen so i head to gamestop and purchased the game. and out of the 5 minutes that ive point into the game i have definetly enjoyed it, im thinking about skipping the psychology test today just so i can put more time into it lol ;)

I bought army of two the day it was released so that right there tells you i could careless on what the reviewers think, and truthfully i enjoyed ao2 a whole lot and i thought it was a great decision i made, i only sold it because i needed the money at the time to pay off for some school stuff, if i had a choice to keep it though i definetly would have- one of the best co-op games ive played by far for this gen.

You are absolutely right! Everyone else is just stupid cattle! I only pick the games that have poor scores, like a man. AND I have enough free time to hunt down gameplay videos for every game months before they are released so I can be the first to say "I want this game, look at my individual opinion skillz!" What losers...
