Is the game play easy to pick up and learn? I learn quickly.Terrencec06Start with 7 or 8 and be prepared to invest some serious time. But gameplay wise they're easy to pick up so you shouldn't have a problem.
I started with 10. I consider it the game that got me into gaming in general. Before it I only played NBA Live 03 and the Crash Bandicoot games. I'd personally recommend playing an earlier FF first to wet your feet in the series. Like people here have already said, you wouldn't be missing anything since none of them are connected, with the exception of X and X-2.
Maybe it wasn't like this for other people, but trying to go back to older FF's after starting with a newer one(FFX was new back then) has been quite difficult. It took me a while to get over the lack of voice overs and pretty graphics. You might not have this problem, but I thought I'd warn you if you do decide to start with X or anything above X.
thanks for the input guys i will have to pick up 7 and 8, and give them a tryTerrencec06Also be prepared to pay a chunk of change for 7. It goes for $70+ on some sites but if you find it somewhere cheap, props to you.
I can never seem to explain to people how the story and characters change with each game.... Anytime I try, they're just like, "Well of course the story is different! Why would you pay for the same game?" But if you want to get in to FF start with VII, definitely the best.
EDIT:

the gameplay isn't easy but it's also different in pretty much every Final Fantasy since FF6. so you always have to learn it all over again.
the story in the different versionshas pretty much no connection except for some details (every gamesets in a new world every time and the characters are never the same). so I see no reason not to start playing FF now. although I recomend that you play other games in the series just because they'regreat games.
BTW: I know almost everyone thinks that FF7 is the best. but in my oppinion it's actually the second best, after FF9
I think it would be to your benefit to play the previous ones just so you can get experience with the series and really feel how the series has evolved but, I say NO because every installment is different as far as characters, gameplay, andstory. Final Fantasy XIII is going to be awesomeI can't wait!!
You should definitely play. They are life-changing for gamers who get into them.
I originally got back into them way back on the old Gameboy. I tried out the first one on NES at my friend's house, but I didn't have a Nintendo then. I had a Gameboy so I played FF Adventure, which was a fantastic game. I played the FF Legend series as well on Gameboy. But FFIII (or FFVI in Japan) really sold me on the series - it was phenomenal. I didn't have time to play FFVII though (each FF is a serious time commitment). I regret not playing FFVII, so I'm hoping that it is remade for the PS3 (lots of speculation about that). Anyway, I played FFXII recently and really liked it too (though I don't think any FF will compare to the one that hooks you into the series - in my case FFIII).
I'd recommend playing the newest one that comes out. The old ones are terrific, but they're probably harder for newcomers to get into because the graphics aren't as good and the play can be slower compared to newer games. But if you have patience and are willing to tolerate older looking graphics, you won't be disappointed by the older ones - they are classics!
