NO, just run a back up from the dash. You may want to delete videos, music, demos to shorten the time and size of the back up. I did this and did not have to redownload updates. Firmware updates up date a chip hence the term firmware not software.
Forgot to mention it backs up game install data where your updates go so again no you don't have to reinstall updates.

When you do the backup, dont you have to have some sort of external media to transfer it to though?Yes, I used a usb hard drive. If your getting a new drive you should get an enclosure for the drive your taking out of your PS3. You'll still need to get something to run the backup with though.

Game updates not the PS3...Are u sure?It's been a while but ya I'm pretty sure. It basically creates an image of your drive so everything is there.
