Okay I KNOW THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN..... but

We all know Sony did not activate the 8th cell because of chip difficulties... not big enough yield and too many failing... so they droped to 7 SPUs and if 1 did not work it was fine as they did not use it. also at 90nm it was giving off SOO much heat that they limited the GHz to 3.2

NOW the chip yields are fine as they shrank the Cell to 45nm and the heat is not an issue...

SO if they activated the 8th cell and raised the GHz to 4.8 from 3.2 it would work. Though some say 10-15 percent of consoles would fail and need their chips replaced. IF this happned would you sue Sony or would you pay for an upgrade how much??

Again I know this will not happen... But its cool to think about.

I have no idea what you just typed but I would just get a new console because I still have over a year's worth of warranty on it.

First of all they are called "SPE" not SPU, secondly the speed is determined by the quality of the chip and heat and I don't think the Cell ever had 8 cores i means what are the chances that every single chip had one bad core.... Thirdly this upgrade would never happen as previous games would not make use of this elusive 8th core and it would just sit there creating heat... And i think this upgrade could be done by some specialised firmware upgrades like activating a AMD dual-core into its originally intended quad-core...

It would basically alienate the entire existing userbase and the dev community at the same time. And if my ps3 died, then... that's it. I will be selling everything I have for the ps3 and washing my hands clean of Sony's filth.

It's complete crap to sue them over this. It's in the agreement when you upgrade and I haven't had one bad upgrade from them since launch.

WOW although I had no idea that the responce would be so negitive. ... let me explain

Sony would have a firmware update that would allow the eigth SPE to activate. This would not have any effect on older games... but would be usable for newer games.

Also the firmware update would allow the CPU to increase its GHz from 3.2 to 4.0 GHz(or there abouts)

I AM NOT SAYING that Sony would come out with a new console with better abilities. But by Having this UPDATE many consoles would fail. MOST of them would be the phat consoles till the slim line launched. Some of the early slim line would also fail. BUT I THINK hardly any of the newer Slims would fail. The ones with 45nm Cell chips.

What I was thinking COULD (IDK) be done is that Sony would need to replace the chips. But then the question is who would pay for it..... That was my question.

I wanted to know IF this did happen would people be happy to get the extra boost in power, and if the cost was around $100.00 dollars to get it fixed OR maybe pay 100.00 for a waranteeprior to the update of $100.00 dollars for 1 to 2 years. That way if your console failed you would be covered.I wanted to know would people be willing to pay for that power boost, or want Sony to pay for it... and if some people would be upset and want to sue.

i really wouldn't care about the boost and wouldn't want to pay for it, so if this did happen i would expect them to pay, being as sony made the product unusable.

I bought the extra 2 year warranty from Sony so I don't have to worry about stuff like this.

First of all, the update you mention probably wouldn't work, because there's a reason that they disabled the last SPE - the yields for the cell at the time were really, really bad, and even among launch consoles, you're looking at (probability-wise) an extreme minority of not only users with ps3's with fully intact SPE's, but would be able to enable the last one without issue. Secondly, the increased heat from the higher clock speed would no doubt make a lot of existing ps3's fail, and fail quickly. especially with the inadequate cooling system most have in place now. if "phat" ps3's now are already overheating at stock with one disabled SPE, what makes you think they'd suddenly be fine with a 25% overclock and eight fully-enabled units? Finally, the reason I went out of my way to buy my current PS3 (and go through so many to get a single working one) is because I needed the extra functionality that the launch 60GB model currently has over any model released since. Especially since mine still has Linux-enabled firmware, which I intend to start installing fairly soon. No model out currently would be able to satisfy me, because the updates that had come out since launched fixed a lot of the BC issues, and nowadays games I can play on my ps3 look better than the system they were originally made for. It would no longer make sense to simply buy a new pstwo and ps3 - even my current, "phat" PS2 has functionality that the pstwo currently doesn't have or can have without significant modification. And there's the whole inconvenience of having two sets of consoles, controllers, memory, cabling and the like to have to upkeep. So, again, Sony has pulled a ton of **** that I do not approve of this generation. A lot of it stupidly and more of it needlessly. To do that, they would lose me as a customer for life, and I would happily support the competing products to spite them. And should my current ps3 decide to tank, there goes the last dime Sony will get out of me.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/170482/sonys_ps3_slim_carries_updated_cell_chip.html "the chip delivers many performance improvements while drawing less power than earlier chips... IBM declined to provide the clock speed of the new Cell processor".

Lets look at this... Sony decides to make this happen to prolong the PS3 life till 2016 or 2017 and have Move, and 3Dwork better.

Let say 90% of PS3's with 90nm Cell chips fail, and 40% of PS3's with 65nm cell chips fail and 5% of PS3 slims fail. SO about 15 Million PS's fain and need a new cell chip placed in them... How much would that cost?? a fix cost $150.00 but cell chips cost less than $37.73 http://www.isuppli.com/teardowns-manufacturing-and-pricing/news/pages/sony-gets-one-step-closer-to-breakeven-point-with-latest-playstation-3-design.aspx.

So lets say for shipping and labor a total of $100.00 for each console... they could sell the warrantee and when people ship it in replace the Chip. $100.00 * 15Million is 1.5 Billion so about the same as it cost Microsoft for their extended warentee program.
