if they own the right to ff7 why dont they jstbuy upsquare's rights to the product(since they love money so much now) and hand it over to a first-party dev like SCEA santa monica or level 5....i mean the 2 could even work together

Yeah, Final Fantasy. A trademark franchise to an entire company, bought by Sony.

Because Sony doesn't own the rights to Final Fantasy VII or any Final Fantasy game. Sony Computer Entertainment America just published Final Fantasy VII in the United States, publish doesn't not equate owning the Franchise. Just like how Sony used to publish Crash Bandicoot and Spyro but now you see those games on every system since Unversal Games/Vivendi owned those franchises.

Only in the United States and Europe. Like I said SCEA published Final Fantasy 7 in the United States because Square had not established themselves in the United States. Publishers put their logos in games because they pay for the rights to publish that game, yet they do not own the rights to the game if the developer did not sign it off. The Japanese/Asian version of the game doesn't have the Sony logo since Square published the FF7 there themselves. In the United States, SCEA localized, published, distributed and marketed FF7 but did not develop the game. 1st-party publishers; such as: Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo; usually help fund the development of some games to be exclusive on their systems for a specific time period. This is why Metal Gear Solid 4 is exclusive to PlayStation 3, why Bioshock was exclusive to Microsoft for a year, and why Final Fantasy 13 is going to be on Xbox 360 & PS3.

Seroiusly, Sony does Not own the rights to FFVII. Besides, the remake would probably be multiplat. More Money=Happy Investors
