I dont get why Sony is not including B.C. with the 40gb model. This just seems like a dumb move to me considering they spent all that time making the b.c. software based, meaning it costs them NOTHING to put it into systems. Is this so they can pretend to justify the lower price or something?? Whats the deal here?

I love my 20gig and love PS3 but this is a bad move for Sony if they are looking to steal the PS2 fans.

u wanna know why, ok, software BC was done by using the Graphic synthisizer chip (the GPU) and emulating the EE. now that both chips are removed, they have to redo full software BC. they dont have it now with the 40gb ps3, but in the future, they will release it with a firmware update.

Actually the graphic synthesizer was removed along with the emotion engine from the begining, so the 80gb has neither as well as the 40gb.

""The Emotion Engine [and Graphics Synthesizerchip] has been removed and that function has been replaced with software," said Nick Sharples, a spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in London. That has a "slightly detrimental effect" on compatibility, he added in an interview with Digit Online web-site."

There must be some confusion on this. It doesnt make sense that Sony would ditch BC totally. Its an important feature. Sony should have used software emulation from the start so they can be a bit more competitive with the price drops.

Alright... this is kinda getting anoying and would rather the mods lock this type of stuff already, a new thread like this pops up every few minutes. It getting rediculous of how people who already have a PS3 are complaining about this great deal for non-PS3 owners. It's actually getting quite annoying and quite selfish.

Did you actually think that Sony would offer a 40 GB PS3 with all bells and wistles of the 60 GB and still be only $399? I didn't think so and many other didn't think so as well. Something had to be removed and would be the only way to warrant an affordable PS3 for people who don't own one. This is good for Sony when it comes to sales and revenue. It is also good for us because now we will have more people to go against online with and the PS3 communtiy will grow. This in turns makes more developers make games for PS3 because the PS3 fanbase will be growing due to this great deal.

No one thinks about that at all though. Instead people just gripe and complain that Sony needs to drop it's price of the PS3 and when they do all ya'll do is grip and complain some more. No one is easy to please anymore and seems that everyone just wants, wants, wants! Spoiled Brats is too harsh of a word to say for these kind of people because the mods would seriously flag me down. So instead, I'll just say that you people are just a bunch of whiners. This deal isn't for current owners of the PS3, it's for people who can't afford the more expensive SKUs and gives them a chance to own a PS3 at an affordable price.

Also take into account that PS1 games still work on PS3 due to the integrated emulator. Did anyone take into account that Sony will integrate a PS2 emulator sometime down the line as a firmware update? No. People just go into a corner(forum) andhave a tempertamtrum, especially already PS3 owners.

Some people don't even care about the backwards compatibility, especially people who don't own a PS3. I don't care for it because I look forward to playing tons of PS3 games this holiday season and I just won't have time to play PS2 games. When 2008 hits, even more games will be coming out as well and my time will be turned to those games... not PS2 games. What will you be looking forward to... Killzone 2 for PS3 or Sonic Riders 2 for PS2? I'm leaning for Sonic Riders 2 if you know what I mean... are you kidding me! I'm bought a PS3 to play PS3 games, not PS2 or PS1 games! With so many games coming down the line for quite a while... where are you going to find the time to play a PS2 game?

If you want to play your old games, then go buy the 60 GB or 80 GB sku instead of crying about backwards compatibility all day. Go find a second job, sell your PS2, find a way to buy the more pricey ones to play your damn old games. No one takes into account that not everyone is made of money and so Sony was nice enough to make a stripped down40 GB SKU that is affordable and can play PS3 games. I'm sure tons of parents and other people who don't own a PS3are going to grab this deal because it just is one, a great deal! You bought a PS3 to play next gen games, not play old PS2 and PS1 games all over again, that feature is just an added bonus for us who want to keep playing old ****! I and many others bought a PS3 to play next gen games, PS3 games, and Sony is allowing a sku with a very delictable price range for all to enjoy PS3 gaming.

I understand where you come from, and have felt like I have been in your shoes before. However let me make clear my thoughts on the issue so you dont have to assume. I know that sony probably did this so they can keep the 80gig sales going. The problem with that however is it could cripple Sony's wishes to bring over the MANY ps2 users, who wont want to spend the extra 100 bucks.

Now WHY on earth would someone like me, who already owns a PS3 be concerned about this? Because the PS3 is an investment for me, and I want to see the system sell and do well to ensure that developers will keep interested in developing quality games for the system. We all know what happened to the dreamcast, and I know none of us want a similar thing to happen with the PS3 (though it probably would never happen as BAD as the dreamcast did)

Well, I think the many PS2 users can either keep their PS2's or wait and see what develops, I heard the 40GB will be BC with some firmware updates.

It's a specualtion because the PSP got a integrated PS1 emulator down the road via a Firmware update. Why not the PS3, it makes sense, no?

Also to answer your last post you replied to mine, there is that other rumor going around that the 80 GB will be going down in price this holiday season... A rumor just like the 40 GB PS3 SKU. Not true, not true and eventually was unvieled, PS3 price drop of the 80 GB sku is highly likely to happen this Holidays.

I also will note that if PS2 owners want to upgrade to PS3, why buy one if you aren't going to play PS3 games but only PS2 games. Why even upgrade at all? Alot of people (probably all people)won't even have the time to play PS2 games due to the great holiday PS3 game lineup and months after games. I mean, didn't we buy a PS3 to play... PS3 games? BEing about to play PS@ and PS1 games is just an added small feature, I don't even play my old PS 2 and PS1 games on PS3 along with alot of other people.

you can still play PS1 and PS2 games regularly on the new PS3's howaver they are forsaking the chance to ever have 100% backwards compatibility, IMO theyr efforts to provide firmware updates for such a big collection of PS2 titles was never realistic in the first place.

Do keep in mind that not using the EEchip they are saving 25$ per unit, not small cash!

I would gladly pay an extra $25 for the EE chip, but $100 to get it (along with other features which will probably be pretty much irrelevant)? Meh...

they have already offered you 4 different systems, if it s such a big deal for you you had 3 other chances to think about this, This is a great move for Sony because more people understand that when given so many chances to buy PS3's and you dont, and you still complain about the 4th system which is for the consumer that wants it cheaper, Your just Ignorant

I dont need chances, I already have mine and have had it since day one. I am saying, it would seem like if it cost nothing why not include it to get more sales? People wont pay 100 extra just for BC when they can get a PS2 themselves for dirt cheap. Listen to the 1up yours podcast and listen to them, you will understand why it doesnt make sense.

Graphic synthisizer chip (the GPU) You cscard me there dude. lol.

I dont think Graphical Snthisizer chip is called GPU.

GPU = Graphic Processing Unit

GPU of PS3 is still there.

non- USA 60G has no EE chips, and they rely on firmware.

40G can do the same, it is just putting the emulation software into the machine, but SONY is not doing it.

This just don't make sense.

And why do I have to abandon all my old games when I bought a new consoles? can't I buy PS3 games and also enjoy my old PS2 games when i feel like to? The fact that you dun play old games doesnt means others are not goin to either.

No one is whinning, PS3 owners or not. It is just ppl's ideas. Among so many things they can take away, SONY take away BC, which can be easily done without much more costs.

Although Sony did praise backward compatibility, it seems that the majority of the people no longer care for it. It was a big thing from PSone to PS2, and I've got my 60Gig, and play PS2 games occasionally though rarely. This announcement, along with most of Sony's announcements, was completely based on the demands of their massive fanbase.

I play old PS1 games rarely as well. Only certain big franchise. FF, MG, etc.

But rarely dun mean never. It costs them not that much to install the software on the new model anywayz.

Take into consideration thatPS2 emulatormay be implemented later via firmware upgrades. Sony never ruled out the possiblity of that but others think otherwise. This actually isn't a bad thing because this means the PS3 community will grow and in turn causes us to have more games because developers will take notice of the growing community and also allows us to have a broader fanbase online to go against. You are lookingat the negatives of this and only looking at this announcement as the glass half empty but I see it the toher way around.

Seriously... When Uncharted,Haze,Folklore,Stranglehold,Ratchet and Clank Future,Jericho,Eye of Judgement, Singstar,Guitar Hero 3,Rock Band,Stranglehold,Simpson Game,Call of Duty 4,Blacksite: Area 51,Army of Two,Assassins Creed,Kane and Lynch,Socom: Confrontation,Timeshift,Orange Box, Time Crisi 4, and so many more games after... when the hell am I going to have time to play an old PS2 game?

da1writer

i totally agree with all ur points.

What concerns me is:

They said 40G is not PS2 compatible. When is the last you heard about this "not compatible" sentence?

When they first removed the EE chips away from the European Models, they didn't say "not PS2 compatible" they said it will be done with firmware.

This time, they say nothing.

The firmware is already done and developed. No extra costs will incur to it if you put it on new models.

The absolute statement made by SONY for non-compatibility will scare some old PS2 users away (who still want to play PS2 games or who love their old collections)

This whole "no PS2 compatibility" thing is a massive mistake on the part of the media. They have misinterpreted the fact that it isn't hardware emulation. The PS3 has been doing software emulation of both the PS2 and PS1 since the European launch and it works very well for the most part. The 40Gb will play PS2 and PS1 games, the media are just artarded.

Actualy you're wrong, while the EEs job is done in software the GS is still present. The removal of this is what is cutting out BC, for now.

I understand your viewpoint, and like you, I am looking forward to more PS3 games than PS2 ones. Still, you cannot assume the wide mass of gamers are like us - consider that some of them may have sold their PS2s to fund their purchase of the PS3s. These people are sure to consider backwards compatibility an important factor.

ALL European PS3s have software BC. Since the beginning and it works!! Why the hell are you complaining? Of course Sony will release a BC software to the 40GB PS3. What did you think? That Sony would ditch the one of the best selling console of all time? Just like that? I don't think so.

Actualy you're wrong, while the EEs job is done in software the GS is still present. The removal of this is what is cutting out BC, for now.teebeenz

No, the GS is not present. The PS3 uses the PS3 Slims emotion engine, which has the GS built into it, so its one chip. They have confirmed that the GS was removed, but for some reason people want to think its still in there, but its not because it is integrated into the EE.

ALL European PS3s have software BC. Since the beginning and it works!! Why the hell are you complaining? Of course Sony will release a BC software to the 40GB PS3. What did you think? That Sony would ditch the one of the best selling console of all time? Just like that? I don't think so.rogerjak

I didnt think so either, but there is NO indication of a firmware update with BC included, or else it probably would have been mentioned. It would be the same software in the European PS3's and they would have included it from the get go if they wanted to include it with the system, but they are not.
