Can you purchase another HD for more space or do you have to delete content to make more room?

Yes, you can buy another Hard Disk, but you have to change it yourself. About deleting stuff, not necessary. just back it up externally, and then change drives. Instructions to change HD are in the User's Manual.

i would recommend buying a big hard disk(250gb+) if you're changing it anyway.

Doesn't it void your warranty by remvoing the original hard-drive?

The reason I ask because when I got my PS3 from service they put a sticker over that hard-drive area on the bottom where you remove the hard-drive.

It does not void your warranty. Read the manual for instructions.

heres you answer straight from the horses mouth

The PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system hard disk drive (HDD) is removable and upgradeable. An upgrade can be performed by removing the hard drive and replacing it with a larger capacity drive. Please refer to the PLAYSTATION 3 system owner's manual on how to properly upgrade the hard disk drive. The HDD must be a 2.5" SATA HDD.

Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc. (SCEA) does not have any information regarding specific compatibility or recommendations for hard disk drives for the PLAYSTATION 3 system. Upgrading the HDD will not void the warranty, however, the consumer takes full responsibility when upgrading the HDD

The nice thing is you can use any 2.5 SATA HDD as a replacement without voiding the warranty (the best thing to do is also use a 5400 RPM drive to keep heat and noise down).

40 will fill up pretty fast. as well as 60 - I suggest getting a 160, which are pretty cheap now. I'll be getting a 250gb soon to replace my 60gb, as I plan on downloading a ton of stuff, and keeping my PS3 active for about 10 years since I doubt the next generation will have backwards compatability.

lol word, a forum topic that suits my PS3, i put in a 320gig HDD, which only comes out to 301 gigs or so cause it uses the rest for system settings and whatnot, that just like the 60 gigPS3 HDD, it says 60 but in reality its only 48 or so for settings and such, but anyway yeah, i got the full 300+ gigs on myPS3 right now and im thinking of what to do with the other hdd, i also got a second PS3 when i bought my hdtv, so its great, but it was only the 40 gig one so i put the 60 gig one in the 40 gig PS3 and now i dont know what to do with the 40gig HDD lol, anyway yeah the warranty doesnt void when you switch them so dont worry, and i was wondering, what all do you put on there to make your HDD so full lol, i mean you cant be that desperate for porn, can you???..............

Unlike what other people are saying... you don't need to upgrade.

If you are just using it to play games and play online - but not for downloading.... 40GB is more than enough space. If you are going to be downloading demo's, you can just delete them when you are finished. But as far as game saves go and such- you would be fine with the 40GB.

And if you find you need more space... then you can buy it later on. But if you are just using the PS3 for games and not downloading - then 40GB is more than enough. Don't waste your money on a bigger HDD unless you really need it.

Not necessarily wasting money, but I like to keep everything I download, and put pics on there as well, on top of all the games I purchase from the PS store.

what do you do w/ the data on the old hd? Do you hook up any usb drive and put it there THEN copy it back to the bigger hard drive? I would hate to keep switching drives. My 60 gig is filling up and I barely even play much games. Thanks in advance

right but the game data is what takes up space. Can we delete this and still keep the save data? Then later if you want to play that specific game again, you can just pop in the disc and use your old saves? I would hate to try this w/o confirmation.

Try to buy the largest HDD you can. I replaced my 20g with a 160g and it's not bad.holdthelemon
Do this so u dont hav to buy another one in the future. But yes, u can hav external or internal. I think internal is easier so i would reccomend internal, unless u hav like a 160 gb ps3... but ya get a harddrive (portable one like a passport one or somethin) and save the memory on there by going to backup utility under system settings. then get a big harddrive for the ps3 ( like i had a 40gb ps3 and upgraded to a 320 gb ). then use the Portable harddrive once u hav ps3 harddrive in and put memory back on and ur done!

I have a quick question.. So I ordered a new hdd already with an external enclosure...

Now, Can I just stick the new hdd in and format it.. then put it in the enclosure and back up the files.. then stick it back into the ps3 so I'll have everything on the new drive?

Or.. will the PS3 erase stuff if the old drive gets pulled out..?

Just make sure you put the original HDD back in there when you send it in for repair if it breaks later. That's why you save the original.

This is the model I bought to replace my 60 gig HD! It is now $20 cheaper since I bought it a few months ago.....

http://oyendigital.com/hard-drives/store/NN2-54-320-SWE.html This model runs at 5400RPM.

If you want the 7200RPM model, http://oyendigital.com/hard-drives/store/NN2-72-320-SWE.html

I just backed up my data onto my iPod, removed the original HD, installed the new 320gig HD & transfered the saved data from iPod. All in all, took about 2 hours or so.

If you have questions about installation, READ YOUR MANUAL!!!!! Or check Gamespot's help section for the PS3 technical section.

Enjoy & have fun!

Don't waste your money on a bigger HDD unless you really need it.

can you point out what I'm doing wrong? I don't download, don't put pics or music (got my MAC for that and external drives and ipods). I bought launch day ps3 60 gb which of course has a capacity of about 55 or less in reality. I loaded games but have not fully played Devil may cry 4, fallout, mgs4, heavenly sword, RSV2, resistance, COD WaW, Gaiden Sigma. Then I looked at my capacity and it went from 55 to 23gb. Sounds to me even if you are gaming you will need a bigger hard drive because alot of the games need 2gb to around 4 like MGS4 to play. Unless you delete them and re-install?

picked up a 320GB HD for 50 quid off play.com a month or 2 ago. it was one of the best choices i made for my PS3, although i only ever intended to use my PS3 for gaming it is slowly becoming my multimedia center. iv got all my music and a few movies plus about 20 PSN games downloaded and still have over 200GB free.

Make sure when you do upgrade you're hdd, make sure that its laptop 2.5" inch SATA which runs at 5400rpm. And no it does not void your warranty, they give you specific instructions on how to remove you're hdd from the ps3, in the ps3 instruction manual.

so which part of it wouldn't work? like even if I made the original hdd external.. I can't back up the files to the new internal hdd?

If none of that works.. do I need to backup everything at once? or I can I back up bits and pieces at a time?

had problems upgrading my hard drive, the drive wouldn't come out of the caddy, the screws have been installed by a machine instead of a man. No matter what screw driver I used I had no joy. I called Sony and they have sent me a new caddy, with screws for free, Now all I need to do is get that 320GB HDD is saw on play.com!
