Probably not that easy to answer until #3 comes out. By the ending of #2, I would say #3 will be a fair bit different to the first two. But definitely play the first two anyway, gives you some background information and they're cheap

You need to atleast play the second, thats what I did. You'll get the idea of everything that went wrong and happened in the first one by the first two levels. Then the story will really pick up.

You could always just get the story background on wikipedia or something. I didn't think either game was that great... I'm not sure why. It might be that since Killzone 2 is a far better sci-fi shooter in every way (in my opinion), that Resistance 1 and 2 seemed sort of dull.

Yes you need to, it's pointless playing Resistance 3 without playing the others.

Playing the first two would help get a feel for the gameplay and the story, although like xsynth said, the ending of R2 creates a dramatic shift for R3. If you're interested in multiplayer, you might be spending a lot of time in the lobby, not sure what the Resistance online presence is right now.

Yeah this guy. And also if you know you're going to get the 3rd one might aswell pick the other resistance games up. They are very good games.

R3 continues the story of R1 and 2. If you want a better experience with R3, i suggest you play them. P.S. Play them even if you don't care about the story, it's 2 of the best shooters on the ps3 and more.

I would to get the whole Resistance experience, R1 and 2 are filled with awesome characters and moments that will give a good indication of what the 3rd will be like. And obvioulsy the games are fun with intense fire fights with weapons that cannot be found in any other game. I have already played them both and plan to so do again some time soon in preperation for the 3rd game.
