IGN's PS3 Game of the Year is...

Metal Gear Solid 4

MGS4 also got awards like Best Graphics Technology and Best Action Game. I felt it was robbed of awards like Best Voice Acting and Best Story (both went to GTA4).

Well besides the Nostalgia of it, MGS4's story was "weaksauce" as you guys put it.

It deserved PS game of the year, but it didn't deserve Story, but I'll agree neither did GTA.

Most annoying cut scenes without being able to play at the beginning ... made me lose interest FASTtophmoney

Agreed, it was a bad first impression which was difficult to accept.

Yeah intil you get to the Dwayne vs Playboy X part its sorta a drag but it gets better with time.

I don't know what you're all talking about but GTAIV is very deserving of best voice acting and story. But Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm should've won best fighting game.

I think everyone knew that MGS4 would win it the day they showed it at E3. But the shocker to me was GTA4, WOW!!:o Because in my opinion, GTA4 was terrible!! But hey, Im not the one judging the GOTY :Phardcore_nate

Agreed... but I see why MGS4 wouldn't win it too. There were certainly some cool ideas in there, but part of the art of storytelling is subtlety... something that completely eludes Hideo Kojima. The melodrama gets to be a little ridiculous in that game, and complexity is always nice, but you go overboard with it and your story ends up being a mess. I know I'll get flamed for this, but whatever. I think MGS4 is one of the PS3's greatest games, and can get behind it getting GOTY awards, but it is most certainly not perfect.

I completely agree with Generic Dude: we can all agree that MGS4 was an amazing game, but being as objective as possible, the story was simply way too preachy, way too melodramatic to really be regarded as good. Again, we are talking purely story telling here, not how much fun you had playing the game or what an exciting experience it was. The fact is, if it were a movie and I brought someone not familiar with the series to watch it, they would have no idea what is going on. I'm not saying the story was bad. Being a fan of the series, I knew what was going on, and being a fan of anime, I'm used to the poor pacing of the neo-philosopical rants and infusion of high minded concepts into ridiculously melodramatic scenes, and quirky humour (Johnny Sasaki is not funny...that whole running gag is stupid). All things said, I still enjoyed the story, because i understand the overall arc, as confusing and ridiculous as it could be sometimes. But best story? No way in hell.

As for MGS4 for best voice acting? Well if Generic Dude thinks he'll get flamed for what he said, I'm certainly going to get flamed for this: David Hayter is actually not a very good voice actor. He lucked out in getting the gig for the first game, and we've all gotten used to him, and luckily we associate his voice with a character and game we absolulely love, but does that mean he's the best? No, it doesn't. GTA4 was EXTREMELY over-rated, and I was very disappointed and frankly bored with the game. But was the voice acting good? Yes, it was great actually.

Get in the MGS4 - big respect to IGN for this! The other awards are no big deal - everyone is mainly interested in GOTY!
