I just recently bought a ps3 (for 200 dollars) and i wanted to play through the other metal gear games to refresh my memory on the series before mgs4 comes out but, my retailer said something about my ps3 not being backwards compatible which i thought they did. If anybody could clear this up for me i'd very much apreciate it, oh and i bought a regular 40 gig ps3.

Since you got a 40 GB PS3, you can only play PS1 and PS3 games on it. You're cut out from any and all PS2 games.

You have to get a 60GB or 80GB model in order to have backwards compatibility. The 40GB model does not have BC for PS2 games.

Nope. It's one of the things they cut out to get the price down to $400.

When you say refresh my memory, this means that you have played them before, right? So couldn't you just play them on your PS2 (assuming you have one).

All PS1 games and most PS2 games. I'm sure there's a list somewhere on the PlayStation website.

Let me add a couple of facts. The 80 GB model runs, as mentioned, 85% of PS2 games using software emulation, while the 20GB (the one I have) and the 60 GB models runs 99% (virtually 100% of PS2 games) uses the same emotion engine hardware of the PS2. I play all my PS2 and PS1 games with no problem at all, the games run better on a 20/60 GB model rather than a 80gb model.

My best advive would be: Either you play your games on a PS2 or try to find a remaining 60 gb model or even a 20 gb (if you dont mind not having card readers and Wi-Fi).

Some BC available with 80GB PS3 but don't expect all games to work.

Region Locked as well for PS2 games.
