first of all, links:

http://community.eu.playstation.com/showthread.php?t=75005 (English official ps page)

http://community.eu.playstation.com/showthread.php?t=74991 (in France as well)

http://community.eu.playstation.com/showthread.php?t=72582 (last but not least, Germans)

The situation:

According to those users, mainly Japanese made Pal PS3 have abnormal fan control behaviour:

1. it gets to easily into high fan levels (level 3)

2. it doesn't step down...never... ever no matter where and what(according to them), till you reboot the system

3. some people from sony hotline told them: 'if the fan control is not stepping down, then the system needs to be 'repaired'

It seems, according to those links( also just do a google for PS3 fan control...hell ya), that most or at least many Pal PS3s(some Canadian ones aswell?!) are reporting that the fans don't step down, no matter what. Only a full system reboot brings those fans back into the first level.

Also users have reported that some PS3s even get into higher levels after just a few minutes(5 min) of idle (up to fan level 3).

Those people also have come to the conclusion that most or all Chinese manufactured Pal PS3s do have a working fan control(which steps down when returning to the XMB) and don't reach such high levels like 3 or even 4 that easily. But that's not all, there are lot's of users who already changed their Japanese made PS3s for a Chinese one ?!

As a Pal user I am also a bit concerned: Therefore I need your time, dear Gamespot US and JP users. Let's collect your experiance with the fan control and see if this is just all a hype or hystery or if there are really 'malfunctions'

My PS3 is doing this: depending on room temperature (e.g. 21 celsius),

idle: after 5 to 10 min: level1 (fan works so quite that you might think it even doesn't run at all)

idle: after 10 min till forever or a application starts: level 2 and a warm PS3(almost as quite as 1...almost, listen very carefully, then you will hear a very slight increase in fan speed!!!)

application: (BRdisk,Game whatever) level 3 and PS3 gets warmer, even hot after hours of play in a warm room(25+ degree celsius, now I can definitly hear it, quite but it's there...still quite and comfortable for me, an old Xbox is still loader)

level 4 and 5: not sure if they really exist, some say yes. maybe I heard it by my self once, when it was almost 30 degree celsius in the room, but then it also stepped down(but not sure)

My PS3 is Chinese made, Pal, vertical, sitting on(not in) a TV rack, side by side to a LCD(which also gets warm or even hot after a while)

Thanks for your attention and sorry for all those info and wall of text, but this needs to be done so we Europeans can enjoy our PS3s as good as you can (hopefully).

Ah, thanks for bringing this up. I wonder if the Australian PAL PS3s have this problem as well.

Hmm, i need to listen to my PS3 more carefully. I'm from Europe and mine is Chinese made. It starts quiet but after a few minutes the fan starts working, even without a disk. It's also true that after a while the fan sound steps down. Have you guys experienced the same? And does anybody know how to distinguish the different sound levels?

Yeah, like legalize3 said, it would be of much help if someone with a NTSC system replied to this thread. I'm almost sure that my PS3 steps down on fan level after a while, but like i said before, i need to listen to it more carefully just to be sure. This is kinda leaving me worried...

You people are nurturing each others' paranoia. Is there actually anything wrong with your PS3s? Any sign of over-heating? Any video or sound issues? Or are you just hunkering over your machines, listening for noises like a crazy-person hears voices?

It's a self-automated fan. It comes on, goes off and whatnot. Try not to fixate on little things and just enjoy your PS3s.

Cheers,

- C

This could have been much worse if it was the other way around, the fans didn't go up. That would result in an overheating system.

I completely understand your reaction but at least you should have said how does your PS3 fan work. We all know that the fan is supposed to work, or else it wouldn't be there... What is worrying PAL system owners is the fact that some units' fans never stop working in an higher level, they only stop when the system is turned off. Can you at least say if this happens to your PS3 or not? It's just a simple answer for a simple question.

I think the problem is that it steps up to the highest "fan level", as they say, and it doesn't step down automatically like it's supposed to under stress-free conditions until a reboot. Not sure if it's a big console problem, but if that ever happened to a PC I'd definately classify it as a glaring problem.

I have a NTSC PS3 and I am having the same issues.  When I first boot it up it's dead silent.  After about 1-2 minutes it gets a little louder.  Another 1-2 minutes a little louder etc, until it's as loud as my 360(while playing a game).  I was getting paranoid cause I know the PS3's are usually really quiet.  I'm thinking about exchanging it for another system, b/c it can get pretty loud.

Yeah ok...
If it never stops running in overdrive even when just being on the XMB, it can degrade the hardware over time. Fans could fail from constantly running at highspeed when they should only be doing so when games are being played that are graphically intensive.

When it's on the XMB, it doesn't need to be doing overdrive and if one of those fans fail from running at that constant highspeed in un-needed moments, then the hardware as a whole will kick it problably sooner then it would have otherwise from lack of sufficient cooling.

I left my PS3 working for hours last night and after 15 minutes where you can hardly hear the fan, it started working at a higher level and never stepped down until i turned it off, not even on XMB. I'm sure my PS3 used to step down the fan level after a while, it just didn't happen last night...

People can stop calling paranoia. We're smart enough to know if our consoles have a problem. Fans that down not step down from the maximum fan level while the PS3 isn't running any applications is a malfunction.
