I read once that the problem is that the XMB takes up A LOT of memory to run. Something like 100 MB. That is a lot of memory when there is only 256 MB of main memory. The Xbox 360 can have the dashboard running all the time because it only takes up like 20-25 MB. Sony needs to heavily optimize their XMB code in order to get it running during games.
Don't forget there is a price to pay for in-game xmb, just like on the 360. Some memory will then always be reserved and less memory will be available for games.
I just want, costume background and don't having to quit a game to see my messages. I don't need to listening to my music while I play a game.That's why games have musics and sounds.

I don't want an ingame XMB, that's just insane and impossible without serious problems. All I want is a music option you can turn on, play MP3s while you're in a game, when you press the PS button. I also want to be able to compile a playlist so I could just load that up with a push of a button. That's all I care about.
I love these stupid petitions. Did anybody here listen to the one episode of the HotSpot where they talk about the DMC 4 on 360 petition? I think it's Alex Navarro or Jeff who points out how stupid these things are, and he mentions all the typing errors in it. If you're going to be stupid enough to write up a petition, or even sign one, make sure it at least sounds professional. I would like access to the XMB in games, but I'm not "fed up" with having to quit a game. If I want to play a game, I want to play a game. If I want to read a friend message or listen to music, I can do that later.
oh ya that reminds me. Why does the 60 Gb version only have a net space of 55 Gb? Where does the 5 Gb go to? Or did they round it up?jhcho2
Two things:
First, 60 GB is not 60 GB. Usually companies advertise 60,000 MB as 60GB, when 60,000MB are 58.6GB. This is because a GB is not 1000MB, but 1024MB.
Second, Some stuff is reserved for the Operating system, just like on the 360 (the 360 also adds some space for game caching in case it's necessary, and a lot of unnecesary content, like audioslave music vids).
