didnt you think to investigate this a bit yourself before installing the drive?geodisicdome
not really but a 320gb 2.5 harddrive 5400 rpm new for $50 couldn't pass this deal, it was just to good. and this will serve me well in the future.
I didn't know you could just install any old hard drive in the PS3... news to me! I've been using a 200gb external drive plugged in through the USB port of my 60gb PS3 for my movies and stuff....
Do you just buy any old PC hard drive then and install away as you would with a PC? If so, I'm off to PC world tonight after work! lol

one thing you forgot to mention and is VERY IMPORTANT. when you do buy a 2.5" hard drive, MAKE SURE IS SATA and not IDE.

Sa-weet! cheers for that fellas. One rather massive HDD coming up! lol.
Apart from the physical install of the hardware, is there any software configuration involved, or will it just "plug and play" as it were?
Also don't forget that you need a laptop drive (so 2.5" drive) 3.5" will not fit inside the case...
Plus need a good micro driver to get the drive screw out...
Otherwise its really easy..
Backup
Stick in new drive and format
Restore
Enjoy...

I wasnt even aware that there were/still are 2.5" IDE drives on the market. I Thought all laptop hdd's were SATA.

are you sure? cause i used a regular standard size screwdrive without any problem, turn the screwdriver slowly and push it down hard until you loose it up.
To all of you, THIS DOES NOT VOID WARRANTY.
