It's timing out when it tries to acquire an IP address right? Or is it timing out before that?
Either way, some easy things you can try:
-restore the psp to its default settings, and recreate the connectio.
-restart the router (unplug it, wait 30 seconds)
Well I just checked my psp and the actual wording is "obtaining ip address." So if you time out before you see that screen, then I suspect that you entered your WEP code incorrectly. So check your WEP code and make sure it is correct.
To reset your psp or restore it to its default settings: scroll all the way left, then scroll down to system settings, press x, then select restore default settings.
Well yeah that router works with the psp, but the fact that you said you think you got the WEP key from the wrong place leads me to believe this is your problem. The WEP key is basically the password to your network. This WEP key would be something you set your self, so that others would not have access to your network without the key. If you do not remember setting a WEP key then your network probably does not have one.
But if you scanned for networks on the psp, and your network was described as having encryption (WEP, WPA), then I suppose you could of set one and just not realised it.
Well, I might as well suggest this now; you should probably change your encryption to WPA-PSK AES. I have not used WEP for a few years but I'm guessing the key is the hashed value of the passphrase, but don't worry about that. Anyway with WPA you only have to deal with your passphrase/password/encryption-key (whatever you want to call it), the rest is all handled under the hood. Plus, WPA is far more secure than WEP.
So by changing to WPA, it could make things easier. Of course you will have to go through the network setup process on your psp again.
As far as that button on your router: well I have one of those buttons on my WRT54GL, but I've never used it, and I don't even think it is a pressable button on mine. So I couldn't offer any input on it.
One last thing. You might as well check to make sure your router is running in mixed mode (b/g).
Well try the instructions here:
http://www.tekstenuitleg.net/en/articles/wireless_network_security_guide/5
The only thing about that is instead of using TKIP, use AES instead.
Well if the default username and password is set to something unknown, then your only option is to do a hard reset on the router.
Find the reset button, and hold it down for 30 seconds. After this, all of the settings will be gone, and it will be at its defaults.
You should be able to connect to the router from the psp without any problems. But, the router won't be using any encryption, so you will have to set that up if you choose to. And to do that; the instructions from my last post will help .
Ok ive done that ^ reset the settings, set them up again and now when i try to connect it says : a connection error has occured. a connection to the access point could not be established. check the secrurity settings for the network and try again. :\ any ideas ? sorry for the trouble people and thanks for your help so far.clarky_ell

After resetting the router, what settings did you re-setup? Generally after a hard reset, there should be no security settings, and you should be able to connect with ease. If you were not able to connect to the router right after performing a hard reset, then my guess would be the router is not running in mixed mode (b/g).
If you have setup the security settings on the router again, and are unable to connect, it is difficult to say what the problem is. However, I would still check to see whether or the not the router is running in mixed mode. Also, are you using WPA now?
Oh, and if you have not done so already; restore the psp to its default settings, then re-create the connection on the psp.

Check that screenshot.
Also I have not used SES, but I'm pretty sure it is proprietary and won't work with the psp - so make sure it is inactive.
It is surprising that you were unable to connect to the router when it was at its defaults. I did a little check, and it seems by default the WRT54G should be in mixed mode. So it seems that may not be your problem, although you should check anyway. Also, have you had any success connecting any other devices to the router wirelessly?
If other devices have been able to connect to the router wirelessly, then my question is whether your psp has ever connected to a wireless network succesfully?
Finally, after a short google search it seems a couple of people have reported problems connecting to the same router with the psp. These problems seemed to be fixed by upgrading the firmware on the router. You may want to try also upgrading the psp to that latest firmware as well.
