Dont really know what you mean but If you mean movies then 16:9 is a lot better cause all movies are shot in 16:9 or wider format. You get a lot of the movie cut-off in 4:3 or you get big black bars.
For games it doesnt matter much since games have the option of rendering in 4:3 or 16:9.

No. 480p is not HD. 720 vertical lines is minimum for HD.

clearing a little bit up here: 16:9 does look better than 4:3, because most movies are shot in 16:9, so to put it on 4:3, they do what is called pan & scan, which crops the video, so always get widescreen movies, and if you only have 4:3 tv, go for widescreen letterbox to get tthe true shot, and HDMI is only for HD

HDMI can be used for any resolution. Why would it only be for HD?

Actualy HD can be put in 4:3 granted your TV allows the option, but it isnt natively in 4:3

That's not entirely true. I can change the aspect ratio on my t.v with the push of a button on the remote. I can watch the news, sports or movies in 4:3 when/if I want, and it's still HD. http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vModelDetail?surfModel=TH-37PX60U&catalogId=13401&cachePartner=7000000000000005702&modelNo=TH-37PX60U&itemId=96290&catGroupId=24973&surfCategory=Plasma+TVs&cacheProgram=11002&storeId=15001&displayTab=S

I used to have a Standard Def Widescreen TV.. Movies and stuff looked much better on it cause of the aspect ratio. A lot of games had issues though even if they were widescreen. Some worked perfect on the Xbox and a select few worked on Gamecube in 16:9. The 360 played most games ok aswell in widescreen. Occasionally some games would be distorted.. It had somethign to do with the fact the TV wasnt HD but played in 16:9.. some games didnt support that combonation.

It looks fine in a standard-definition television.  I played it for my first week on my old SDTV.  Then I got my HDTV back from repairs.  You will be fine with a SDTV, but HD isn't bad.  If you want to upgrade to hdtv get a CRT.  30' at 1080i for around 700 dollars.  They do look good, my freind bought the LG CRT from bestbuy.  His 360 looks great on it at 1080i.

Don't believe the hype. You don't need and HDTV or EDTV to play a PS3 / 360. They do enhance the viewing pleasure, but aren't mandatory. Plus, look at it this way. When you turn 16, you can get a part time job at an electronics store and get a discount on the set of your choice that you can say is all yours. :D
