Simply get a bigger laptop Hard drive and install it. upon installing it the PS3 will ask you to format it and then youre done. oh save all youre stuff to a flash drive or external HDD so you can have all youre data back

there is a full guide on gamespot somewhere and if you are going to upgrade do it properly and get either 300GB or 500GB because once you've installed one you don't want to do it again in like 8 months.

wait until you get down to

I fitted a 250GB to mine - already have 30GB of music, 15GB of Movies/Video clips/trailers and 2GB of photos... its great :D

Installation is easy:

- pop the black panel off

- undo 1x screw

- slide HDD out

- remove HDD from brackets (4x screws)

- screw brackets onto new HDD

- slide HDD back in

- download newest PS3 firmware from the PS website and put that in a USB

- turn on PS3 it will format the new HDD

- insert USB with latest firmware

- let it install and your done

I think the system already takes up 10gb alone. So 40 gb users get shorthanded.

Btw, what is the harddrive called? I'm planning to upgrade too before I really start playing a lot on my PS3. I just got a PS3 a few days ago and I dont want to have to buy a flash drive or external HDD just to transfer my data back. I know it's a laptop HDD, but what's the model name? Thanks in advance. :)

Model doesnt matter just go to a computer hardware store and buy a high quality laptop harddrive (3.5'' SATA I think, not sure though)

There is no one model of hard drive that will work. Go to newegg or something, and look up laptop hard drives. Just make sure it is a 2.5" form factor drive and that it has a SATA connection. Those 2 things are the only requirement for the hard drive. There are many different brands out there and the highest capacity I've seen is a 320gb drive which I installed in my system. Also you will probably see 2 different drive speeds for the hard drives, a 7200rpm and 5400rpm drive. Just go for the 5400rpm since you don't get much more speed from a 7200rpm drive for the cost.

That was very helpful. Thanks! :) I'll shop around.

The nice thing about the PS3 it can use any 2.5 SATA HDD and instructions are in the owners manual on how to exchange the HDD.
