Might as well spend a bit extra for the slim.

I'd take the Haze guy's advice and get a slim. It would be more reliable too. Game installs can vary between 1-5 GB's, with a 40GB you may struggle for space at some point.

First of all, that didn't answer my question. Second of all, what is so special about the slim?

The slim has a lot of space, so you don't have to worry.

mECHwARRIORx2

slim is 120gb hdd has reduced power consumption and is brand new unlike that refurb. The only way I'd buy a refurb is if it was PS2 bc and the 40gb sku isn't...............so there is really no point unless you like the sensor buttons on the 40gb and/or plan on putting Linux on your PS3 as both are not available with the slim.

The hdd size all depends on how many games you're going to buy. Some games require no install and then some have up to a 5gb install. Personally I don't like to delete game data and then have to reinstall when I want to revisit a game that's why when my 60gb was full I upgraded to a 320gb hdd. I have like 70 PS3 games though.

P.S. your gf is awesome. definitely a keeper

If you don't use the HD for anything other than games 40GB is probably enough. But like others said you're better off going for the 120GB slim for reliability and less power usage alone. If you feel bad about your girl spending that much then you can offer to split the cost.

No way is 40gb enough, with all the patches and installs. Especially if you make use of all the PSN stuff.

Get the 40 gb, trust me, you don't need that much space. I downloaded all Grand Turiosmo 5 cars and all God of War 3 online map packs and still have 39 gigs left. 120 is blantly uneeded. Anyone who says so is lying.

Well, depending on how much games he's going to buy off PSN or on disc, also videos, demos, and game installs can come into mind. 40GB can fly by quite quickly.

I personally used all my space on my 80gb PS3, but that is because I download lots of PSN games and rents lots of games and they require game install sometimes. But go with the slim, and split the cost if you ask me :P

It could be enough, just depends on what games you get. Some games don't require any install, some require small installs, and others require 4 or 5+ GB installs (MGS4, Bioshock, Fallout 3, etc)

I've got a 40 and no way is it going to be enough. I have less than 10GBs left and I really don't have that many games.

Well its easy enough to fit a bigger hard drive later and so buy the ps3 you can afford at the moment as one with a 40GB hard drive is better than no ps3 at all.

40GB is a bit tight, and I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes more of a problem as time goes on. While you can delete the installs from the disc after finishing games, having a bigger disk means you don't need to deal with the problem.

That said, you can easily get by with 40GB if you don't plan on downloading many demos or PS Store games. And remember that the hard drive is user upgradable and takes standard notebook hard drives, so you've always got the option of upgrading later.

If you ignore the hard drive size, the main draw cards for the slim though are (a) lower power consumption so potentially less noise and (b) HDMI CEC support (aka Bravia Theatre Sync) which allows compatible TVs to power the PS3 on and off and issue some other basic commands (play, stop, fast forward, rewind, etc).

I have a 40 gb ps3 and so far no problems...i cant see why you would need a bigger hard drive unless you fancy downloading quite a few games off the psn store, or demos and lots of game add ons maybe. So far im doing fine with what i have, and what is all this about installing games?? You mean when you buy some games on disc you have to install all the data on the disc to the ps3 hdd?!

40gb wasn't enough for me with the 1-5gb installs. I ran out of space in around a year so.

i have a 40gb. yea, there's been times when there's wasn't enoguh space, but that's because i download trailers (especially from the Japanese PSN Store, their vids are like 300-500mb each but i can get them in the Canadian PSN Store for lik e57mb lmao) so i transfer them to my external hard drive. but, if you're only concerned about game installs (no music, video, etc.) 40GB is more than enough. i got Valkyria Chronicles (4Gb install), MGS4 (5Gb install), Killzone 2 (1GB?) Batman AA (3GB), etc. and i still have space to spare. oh well, Uncharted 1 & 2 don't require installs so there ya go. :D game installs range from 300mb~2GB. MGS4 and Valkyria are exceptions. they're just huge. Batman AA 3GB is optional. you can install 1Gb or 3Gb (faster load times, but it won't install 3Gb until you're near the end, when you unlock all maps). so yea, regular games on average is about 700mb~1gb installs. going by that, you can at least fit in around 10 games (or maybe even more) without any music, pics, or trailers whatsoever. free demos are also 1gb-2gb.

Depends. If you want to store movies, pics and other cool things on your PS3 then no. Good news is you can always upgrade the HDD later. Amazon has 500 gig 2.5 sata HDD for only 90 bucks.

First of all, the drive will need to be a 2.5" SATA laptop hard disk. If it is an older IDE disk, or a 3.5" drive then it won't fit. The only other issue you'll need to worry about is power consumption. The original drives in PS3s are 5400rpm drives, so if your 120GB drive is 5400rpm there is probably not much to worry about. If it is faster (e.g. 7200rpm), it will work but you might notice a slight increase in fan noise due to the extra heat. If it is not a laptop drive, then it might draw too much current to work with the PS3 power supply. If everything looks okay, just follow the instructions that were included with the console. If you've got an external USB drive, it is probably best to use the PS3's backup feature to save all your saved games and downloads so t hat they can be restored on the new disk. It can take a while, but it saves having to reconfigure everything after the upgrade.

I've already got more than 40GB on mine. A few game installs, about 15-20 demo's, maybe 50 CD's woth of music, a bunch of photos and videos. If you're just going to play games, 40GB would probably be enough.

40GB is definitely not enough because you only get about 15GB of it to actually use. Seriously, I can store more demos, videos, add-ons on my 20GB 360 than my 40GB PS3.

I constantly need to clean out downloads/unused save files in my 40gb PS3. Also I believe the 40gb models are prone to Blu-ray lens failure, mine went out after 14 months and when it did I did some research and found it was pretty common in my model.

I think it depends on what you plan to do with the console and how youplay games. I personally had teh 40 gig and ran out of space quite quickly. Normally, I only play one game at a time, but lately I don't have time to play all the game I buy so I've been jumping around a lot. Since most games now seem to have a 3-5 gig install, I found I ran out of space quite quickly. And that was just for regular games and didn't include holding on to demos (roughly 1 gig or more), videos, Downloadable PSN games (incluing Burnout which was 4 gigs), etc. Plus I'm Canadian so I don't have the option to download tv, movies or the upcoming Netflix capabilitites.

If you only play a couple games at a time, or don't mind micromanaging your HDD and deleting installs for games you don't play, then go ahead.

But I personally bought a 250gig HDD and upgraded my console. So I would probably recommend getting the new slim which has the bigger HDD. But if price right NOW is an issue, get the 404 gig and you can always upgrade the HDD yourself later, if and when you need it.

Depends on how active you are with your PS3 and if you download lots of content. I personally wouldn't go with older PS3 models like the 40 GB or 60 GB especially from GameStop, they are more prone to problems. Just get yourself a Slim and buy LBP or something so you and your gf can play together.
